Help: How do I be a good chess player

Sort:

Can someone please tell me how to be higher rated and be better at chess?

MSteen

Stop playing blitz. Stop playing bullet. Start playing about 10 online games at once and take the time to really really think about what you're doing before you move. Use the analysis feature to move the pieces around.

When you do play live, play at least a 15 minute time control.

Use the explore feature here to look at dozens, hundreds, thousands of master games and try to figure out why they did what they did.

Repeat the above endlessly.

Ohhhhh thank you guys. Now I see. I always played bullet and blitz thinking it would be good. Btw, I do watch featured games.

Blitz is good for your chess, almost every strong player has played blitz and it's a great way to test your openings out with a lot of data.

I think the best thing to do is just do alot of tactics.

acountisasgoodasclos

and blay blitz games if you have time play 10 minute games if you don't play 5

Dude, enough - It's iron clad fact that playing blitz is terrible for someone at his level. It's teaching him absolutely nothing but bad habits.

GrandChampion2

It works, I played a 10 minute blitz game and won

acountisasgoodasclos

Maybe the way you play blitz.

GrandChampion2

I kept losing 1, 2 , and 3 minute blitz games because of time.

acountisasgoodasclos

I mean you have to look at the game afterwords.

Absolutely not true. There's nothing wrong with blitz. It's certainly not the most effective form of training but it won't hurt.

Well I cant do much except play blitz, I don't have a Premiumn membership to do tactics or anything else

Succorance

My advice would be to do a little bit (preferably a lot) of everything. Practice tactics, review master games, watch instructional videos, read articles and books, study openings, play long games (and review them), play blitz games (and review them), etc.

acountisasgoodasclos

+1 again

gumby103

you don't need a premium membership to play longer games whether they're 15/10 or 30 standard.

Julian,

Regarding blitz and your comments on my advice: First, of course I must bow to your greater rating. Whatever you are doing, it seems to be working. BUT I notice that you have strong ratings in all kinds of chess here. You are taking your own advice.

The OP, on the other hand, has NO games online. He has NO standard games. ALL his games are bullet and blitz. Now, I don't argue that bullet and blitz can be fun, and they can be a great way to explore a lot of different openings. But you have to know what those openings are first. This guy is like a weightlifter who wants a great body but works nothing but his arms. Without a well-rounded routine, he's bound to fail.
