Good selections.  Vukovic is a classic.  It turned me from a Caro player to a dynamic Sicilian player.

I gave stars on the basis of importance/priority.  For instance, I think there are a number of other endgame texts that are more beneficial than Nunn's Endings.  It's good, but I think Keres and others are more important to go through.

Ironically, I think Chernev's "Logical Chess Move by Move" is critically important, only if you are going to use Silman's method (discussed in HTRYC), where you are told to annotate games as best as you can (look up a pgn of the game before you look at Chernev's annotations) and select candidate moves before you move on to see what the next move is.

Great advice from a great player.

A diamond memebership and the will to study would go far. There are so many learning resources here.

I stopped seeing him a year and a half ago.  He's not a bad person at all, but he's just very opinionated.  I switched to the Supercharge your Chess 21 Day Program as an alternative training method.  It's helped me a lot!

I am only just seeing your post now. I hope that you haven't given up on Jeremy Silman. Has your coach published anything ? I doubt it. If by now you haven't given up on him, check out the BackyardProfessor on YouTube. He uses Jeremy Silman's books demonstrating his journey as a chess amateur to becoming a master, very, very helpful.

Please don't blame Jeremy Silman for the Backyard Professor - it's not Silman's fault that his work is accessible to many people who aren't anywhere near ready for it.

As I've heard many times before, you have to have some chess before you can reassess it.

So, why are you putting down the Backyard Professor ? At least he showed that he was on a learning journey to improve his chess. Why are you hatin?

Did you do anything for chess fans to inspire them ???

I have not given up on Silman.  I still refer to his endgame book and The Amateur's Mind to help reinforce what I've learned.

How does that work?

Seriously, "Reassess Your Chess" by Jeremey Silman is the most ingenious chess book that I've ever read. Anyone that has a passion for the game will catch an amazing "second wind" after reading that book. It is THE transitional book from going from beginner to intermediate.

It's like gas on the fire to anyone that has a passion for chess.

Granted, I haven't read the 2 books that you cited, but if they're anything like 'Reassess', then your coach is a goof and you should look at getting your instruction elsewhere.

My record on ICC is +1900, and I beat rated +2000 routinely, that's near CM, and I'll gladly help bring your chess to the next level.

Looks like most swindles happen off the chessboard.

A chimpanzee can also use Silman's books to wipe his ass. He will be equally educative, and certainly funnier than the B.Y.P. Let alone that a chimpanzee in all likelihood plays better than B.Y.P. ...

I'd vaguely heard of the BYP but assumed he was like Bill Nye the Science Guy.

Apparently BYP is self-taught about a large range of subjects and enjoys making Youtubes about whatever he is currently learning. He started with religious themes building off Mormonism but now is consumed with chess.

In his pre-chess phase he morphed from being a politically conservative Mormon to a politically liberal Mormon skeptic, which caused much consternation among those who followed his Youtubes.

I get the impression the religious-political controversy was painful for him and he is happy to switch full-bore into chess.

Silman does talk like a docker, if you like the east end of London style he is your man though.

I agree with his coach. I hate the way Silman teaches too.
