Online Chess Decrepencies

Just want to hear some opinion on online chess players. I found too many online chess players at 2000+ that are 1600 or less on standard live chess and sometimes less! I had once a 1300/bullet, 1350/blitz, 1430/standard = 2100 online chess ??? When complaining I was told I'm too suspicious. What do you guys think? Can you really be a very weak live player and very good at online chess? I think not.

Yes that is possible.

Some people simply are rubbish when it comes to a time constraint, but when able to take hours upon hours for every single move then their chess really shines.

Quite a lot of people, including me, are rated higher in online chess than in live. 700 points is quite a big difference, but maybe they're just spening hours on every move, as Zigwurst says.

Some things to keep in mind.  For developing and lower rated players, almost everyone agrees that tactics often decide games.  In correspondence games, it is possible to be much more thorough.  This favors players that take their time and are very careful.  Now, in correspondence, some players do not change the way they play, and just move in a few minutes or even a few seconds each turn.  It should be obvious that a player that would lose to one of those players in blitz would perform better in correspondence games.  There are also a lot more random "timeouts" in correspondence games, which favors the consistent, thorough players, again.

To sum up, it is possible to get a very high correspondence rating by just being careful, thorough, and consistent if you have solid fundamentals positionally.

I see a lot of posts about how "a 1500 rated player just isn't good enough positionally to" do this or that.  Remember, it's tactics that trip up most lower rated players.  A lot of them have studied positional ideas for years trying to improve their chess and then fail to tactics in live games.

It's not only possible to have a much higher rating in correspondence, it's not even that uncommon.  It's just a totally different game.

Some online chess players research the openings they are playing, consult databases, even look up relevant GM games. They set up the board and move the pieces around and check out the tactics on every move.

They will produce much better chess than they would in live chess. Just the reduction in obvious tactical blunders will raise their strength a good deal

I'm new to chess.com and am just starting my first online games.  I agree completely with chessmicky as this is exactly what I am doing.  I open an analysis board and start moving through various ideas and combinations in preparation for my next move.  This is making my online games very interesting and fun for me.  I get to take a lot of time to study the positions.  I suspect (and hope!) my rating will be higher because of this.

Just to chime in--that's exactly what I'm doing. I'll open the analysis board and use that thing to death.

I actually have folders full of variation trees made with xmind for my correspondence games.  And I still blunder ;)

MetalOpera, one of the player I reported, has been banned. He would always crush 1900+ players and then struggle to beat 1900- players. He was the winner of numerous online tournaments, all by cheating. All he really had to show for is his 1600 rating standard chess. He got my attention by outplaying me in one game and then when he had very obvious checkmate in one he purposely blundered and allowed me to draw by repetition. His reason for doing so: Always stay under 2000 and try not to win all games as to not raise suspicion.
