Yes probably would have. If one wants a large sum to arrange the match maybe that person is also not too keen on having the match. Just my 50 Cents. Also a lot going on 1914, I guess.

Who wins in the end ? Some claim the former was at the height of his strength and may have managed to beat Lasker. He was an outstanding player but had the misfortune of Lasker charging a large sum to be willing to arrange a match. It will be pure speculation, but from what we know, the fact that the match did not take place is a great loss for chess.
