I first started chess when I was 7. And I was thinking that I should make up my own opening. Here is an example.

I´d play 3... e5

I know that is the best move to start with but I said, I made up an opening. You see I was just telling a little opening I made a long time ago.

Schachgeek, I know I'm getting made fun of, but just as I said, it was just a little opening I thought I'd make up so people can talk about it. But know, I think I'm just so stupid.

My rating is only 1139. And I thought everyone would like it. But now everyone is saying, i'd rather do that. I'd rather do this. I feel so bad! Cry

so black hangs his e5 pawn and white doesnt take it for nothing? interesting.

Man have you ever played the Ruy Lopez?

I think (I know) that this is a pathetic opening. Black just needs totake the queen, and you cant castle.then, since black is totally dominating the center, you will be shredded in a matter of  a few moves. Yell Dont use this opening!

The opening is defective because black is not playing the best replies. Already at move 3 he leaves a pawn hanging. If 4. Nxe5, white has big advantage. So black should not play 3. ...c6. To make up an opening against weak moves is what we call "shooting fish in a barrel."

Hi guys,

For the most frequent chess openings, Game Explorer give us these statistics,

1.e4 1,194,068
38.4% 31.9% 29.7%
1.d4 910,048
38.7% 34.6% 26.7%
1.Nf3 253,232
36.8% 38.3% 24.9%
1.c4 193,198
38.5% 35.5% 26%

e4 has a 9.7% greater chance of winning as white

d4 has a 12%    "               "    "     "         "     "

Nf3 has a 11.9% "             "     "     "         "     "

c4 has a 12.5%  "             "     "      "         "    "

This implies that 1) c4 is the best opening.

Watch your backrank.

any comments?

Research11 I think it is awesome that you try to make up your own opening. Chess is supposed to be fun, sometimes I think having computer models of thousands of games is a bad thing because a "new" idea or opening to you or me has probably been tried many times if you check the computer databases.

Have fun and don't worry about what anyone thinks or says. Maybe you could start a group for people your age that probably don't have the courage to speak out like you do.

I don't think this is that simple at all. I think there will be a long game ahead after 6... Qxd1+ (I assume this is what you mean by taking the Queen). First of all, I don't see how is black dominating in the centre. I mean the central pawn formation is almost symmetric and white at this stage has developped couple of more pieces to control the centre. Secondly, loosing the castling right is not such a big deal here. It causes some inconvenience with coordinating the rooks but since the Queens have been exchanged white is unlikely to get chekmated anytime soon. There are some opening variations where the other player - usually the one playing with black - is willing to give up castling rights if she can at the same time trade Queens. For example the next variation has  been played several times between GM:s

And Research11 I think it's good that you try to think in the opening using your own brains instead of just copying some book variations without proper understanding. Considering your rating most of your suggested moves look quite sensible to me. The only really big problem is the above mentioned 4. Nxe5 which would give white significant advantage. Therefore black needs to improve on move three. I'm sure that as you get stronger you begin to notice some other more subtle problems as well...

thanks. :) i really needed your compliment for me. i did it all in my head. every single move. i like my opening a lot and everyone was telling me how bad it was. i'm glad you came and did a comment. :D

Maybe we wouldn't have all come out shooting if you hadn't given your post such a provocative thread (as "the best opening").

And I'll add this too...it's all very nice (and touchy/feely) to "invent your own opening" and be creative and all that classroom junk.  But seriously, do yourself a favor:  read an opening book (or database or what have you).  If you're really intent on improving at this game, bear in mind that millions of very talented players have preceded you, and if you actually deign to use their knowledge to your benefit, you just might find yourself getting better in leaps and bounds.  Trust me...it's what I did.

when i said "the best opening", i just wanted more people to have more comments. they will think it's a good openingand comment me. i thought i would make nice comments. (but it turned out to be comments of telling me what to do)
