Ugly Americans?

Is it just my coincidence, or does it seem that mainly Americans (with a few Brits thrown in) are the ones who make assinine comments while playing? Last night I got this beauty from a "gentleman" from Miami: "Why don't you resign you filthy scum?" I'm probably one of the older players online and playing for fun and mental exercise. I can't understand the joy of dissing an opponent. But I don't seem to ever encounter that from those I play from the Middle East, Asia, Europe, Australia or South America. As an American, it makes me sad to think these clowns do the same with people they play from other countries.

Younger Americans do have a different sense of propriety. Mostly they don't realise how rude they are to more mature adults. Also, the anonymity of the internet does seem to bring out the worst in the best of us. I'm an older Canadian and we are starting to see the same up here.

Such an absurd behaviour deserves to be ignored IMHO. Let them enjoy their hate.

They could just be the only ones who speak English. Plus America has the most chess.com members by far, so the chances of meeting someone like that are higher.

Keep in mind that the internet affords people the "luxery" of being anonymous.  They will say things they wouldnt normally in front of someone.

Block them...Report them...Move on.

And if you know who they are, just put them out of their misery.

Haha!

Edit: I meant Chessweb101 had some good points. :)

Every country has it's share of the good, the bad, and the ugly.

"Why don't you resign you filthy scum?" is quite mild in comparison to some of the slander that is bandied about.

You can also take part in a somewhat perverse bonding ritual by replying with say.. " I don't wish to resign, because playing you is giving me an erection "   ...or something along those lines. Smile, and out-gross them.

Instead of you getting upset, fight fire with thermo-nuclear fusion ( or fission )...so to speak.

Younger Americans are mostly spoiled rotten brats who think they are entitled to everything. In fact, many "adult" Americans also fit this description.

I know many wonderful young Americans. Perhaps, it's the ones who spend all their time on the internet and are unhappy with their lives that tend to act out.

Ziggy_Zugzwang

I complain about the young all the time. Old codgers have been doing that since the beginning of time. It's mentioned in Plato...but I would like to slap a few of these mummy's boys who insult and hide behing their keyboards...

To be fair to the abuser, it is entirely possible that the OP was playing on in a hopeless position. I'm sure everyone knows just how annoying that is.
Why that should cause the abuser to question the OP's hygiene is something that is not at all clear to me.

Pulpofeira

Well, I never find annoying my opponent being in a hopeless position, whatever he/she does then...

Unkn0wnn

maybe administration would start to do something about it ? 3 times warn and then ban for 10 minutes - sorted IMHO

I have received that kind of offence numerous number of times.

anybody ?

If your opponent is in a hopeless position, you've done something right, and are winning....exactly what you said, no point in being annoyed about winning, even if it takes a while xD

toy with them, like a cat with a mouse. pick off all their pieces one by one. slowly back the king into a corner. try it, it's fun

How can you be sure they are American ?  Cool

Almost as bad, I've had this a couple of times, is when a player realises that they are going to lose, and still has plenty of time left on the clock, and so doesn't make their move, attempting to make their opponent ie me resign out of frustration and boredom. Talk about unsportmanship.

I am beautiful. Now all you whiners go eat poop.
