What chess player do you think of when someone talks about chess?

Carlsen, he is the only one who's really marketing himself properly as an athlete -- a must if you want to gain attention from the youth. Also he is a fit and attractive individual which isn't always something that springs to mind when people think of "chess players" -- It shows that he takes great care in all aspects of his life.

Just to be clear, I don't think of Assault when someone talks about chess; I think of !>ME<!

Nigel Short - solely because watching him on tv as a 6 year old (me, not him. He was 10!) got me interested in playing in the first place. He caused a mini explosion in the game in the seventies in England, so much so that even my poor little Secondary Modern School ended up with a thriving chess club.
For what it's worth I don't care in the slightest if chess players are "fit and attractive". Oy.

Always Kasparov ... because he beat Deep Blue when I was a kid and we were hugely excited about dude beating machine.

A cheese point is what you get for posting something cheesy like "My mother is the most beautiful woman in the world" or "my 4 friends on here"
Magnus Carlsen, since he's the current world champion.
