What chess player do you think of when someone talks about chess?

Most peeps on this thread have gone for who they think of as the "best" - either current or historic. That's not quite what the OP is asking, IMO.

Clarification: This is just an observation, not a judgement!

Could be Carlsen, Kasparov, Alekhine or Fischer!

I think of Fischer in his blitz game with Reuben Fine... Evan's gambit accepted. Fine thought one sooo young would falter... a mere 17 moves later he was in deep do-do. Also Fischer in game 6 of the his Icelandic encounter with the Spazz... a masterpiece on 64 squares! Spazz was overwhelmed just like Larsen, Taimanov and Petrosian. And game 13 in Iceland convinced Botvinnie that Fischer could be considered the best ever.

A cheese point is what you get for posting something cheesy like "My mother is the most beautiful woman in the world" or "my 4 friends on here"

BUT... my mother is ...or was.. the most beautiful woman in the world. Laughing

Initially I think of Fischer, but whenever I think of Fischer I automatically start think about Josh Waitskin. I think that's because I really don't know that much about Waitskin. Anyone know any good books on Josh Waitskin?

EDB123

I don't get it, why would I think of a person at all?  I picture a chess board.

Also, I cringe whenever anyone tries to make an analogy based off chess - it never works (except that one time Feynmann did it, that was pretty good).

I was born in 1951, so I guess I'll never be able to shake Fischer leaping first to mind when someone says "chess." But I have to admit Carlsen is a VERY close second these days. He's unbelievable, and I hope to be able to follow his remarkable career for many years to come.
