I believe Karpov was a more interesting chess player than Anand even if he did kill his brother for the ring of power and live in the tunnels under the mountain eating goblins and fish. But what would have happened if Bilbo had just given Karpov back the ring? Would Karpov have just lived in the tunnels under the mountain eating goblins and fish forever or what?

Is Karpov still playing?

CalamityChristie

he's number 177 on the rating list apparently. it's up to him whether he plays actively or not i guess. need to backtrack a bit for the 19 months back list.

They cannot be compared since Karpov doesn't play now actively.Anand has 7 years  as champion while karpov has had 16 but the times when karpov was at his peak till now a lot have changed so it is not suggestable to try to find the best of the two

Karpov and Anand are both great players. Each of them has their own strengths and weaknesses.

I think Anatoly Karpov was greater player than Anand in chess history.

These players belong to different generations. That's why you can't judge, who is better player, just by looking at their games against each other. Anand played most of his games against Karpov when Karpov no longer belonged to elite. You can't compare FIDE ratings either because of rating inflation over time.

Playing style and approach to chess doesn't allow you tell who is better. You can favor one player over another because of his playing style and approach to chess, but you can't use it to compare their actual strengths.

The only reasonable way to compare players of different generations is to look at their careers. What was their score against top players while they were dominating the chess world. How many strong tournaments they won and for how many years they dominated chess world. So let's compare.

Karpov DOMINATED chess world for over 10 years and he was among the elite players for 20 years.

Did Anand dominate chess world? I don't think so. He never did. Take a look at his score against best players while he was on top. He defeated Kramnik 9-8 with 67 draws. Does it look like domination? Looks equal to me, maybe Anand is slightly better. Anand was owned by Kasparov his record with him 6-16 with 32 draws. Aronian defeated Anand 6-1. He never won against mature Carlsen in spite of having big plus score against him. When did Anand win stroung tournament last time? When the last time he was number 1 FIDE rated player?

If we put our favoritism asdide, and look at things reasonably Karpov is greater player than Anand based on their careers. Only Garry Kasparov and Emanuel Lasker dominated chess world longer than Karpov.

in any case, i reckon Predator would beat Alien.

Anand, it could be argued, has never been the world's top player. Even if you argued that he was, at some point, it wasn't for very long. And it was after Kasparov retired. He's world champ right now, but is he the best?

No it couldn't. He obviously was, and it's definitely not short and yet continues (some time before Mexico till now). Yes he is.

Karpov was awarded the title by default, defended it against Korchnoi and lost against Kasparov.

Anand won the title, won once again against Kramnik, and then against Topalov, and especially against Kramnik he showed an exceptional form and preparation. Against Topalov, he dealt excellently with horrible circumstances (the volcano plus being in Danailov's homeland.)

Not to mention he won the title in three possible formats (2 with the real title and one with the fake fide title), would have won the fide title earlier if Karpov weren't a shameless wolf.

Oh, have I mentioned I'm a huge Anand fan?

Anand is so much better than karpov
