To other it was Fischer's mad brilliance with tactical positiona; chess where everything is perfectly timed. Kasparov was just a beast. He cut everyone down in his path. Carlson has computers so... The best? No one knows. If we teach Morphy chess theory, include Fischer and Kasparov onto the new gadgets called computers, and then have them all play a round robin with carlson.... then we could determine it.

no we could only determine who has the superior memory, not who is more brilliant/creative. To do that, they'd all have to be playing in a non-computer era
Please, give just one example of the "fortresses" that Fischer set up from his games. I know what a fortress is in chess, but I have no clue what you're talking about.
Fischer wasn't known for his fortresses in chess, at least not in the sense I know of.

I eat chicken with fried rice once in a Chinese snack bar reaustarant. It was the best meal I eat this year. Simple-tasty-healthy. I felt after that could follow thirty moves theory in Najdorf and twenty seven in Gruenfeld. Amazing!
Capablanca is the GOAT. He is idolized nearly by all top GMs. He is not as flashy as Morphy but usually wins... against top players of his time like Lasker, Nimzovivh, Tartakeover, etc. Morphy did not have tough opposition to show his greatness.
It is impossible to name just one. Many of them were absolutely great for their respective era.
BTW what means greatest? Strongest? The one who contributed most to the game? The one who had the most beautiful games? Because the answer would be different for each one of those questions.

As I've often said, or implied, Bobby was an universal player. But then, heh, it's always been known he despised negative or tight positions where the air was thin. Not a wild player but always foremost an active one.
