The point of this exercise is to demonstrate that training with engines confers a real advantage. Sure, Fischer was great in his day, but today's elite players really are better than Fischer at his best.

We can make excuses, we can try to explain it, but the evidence is clear: Fischer was the best player ever, until Kasparov came along. Kasparov helped Karpov to surpass Fischer's best, making me wish even more that Fischer and Karpov had played a few great matches.

Chess is the poorer because Fischer decided not to play Karpov. And Fischer probably didn't reach his potential precisely because he did not test himself against Karpov's best.

There was no "Karpov's best". There was Karpov + hypnotist (see video above).

My father would often played Fischer and Kasparov in private games,  before my fathers death he gave me games that he had played over the last 40 years. My father would consistly beat both Fischer and Kasparov which would make him rated near the 3000 mark

Rather than trying to decide who the best player ever was, I would start appreciating all the extraordinary there are/were.

if you're the goat that means you're a loser...if you're taking the blame you're the goat aka scapegoat

This is an endless argument that won't be resolved.  Some say it was Tal.  Tal said it was Bobby Fischer. Fischer said it was Paul Morphy.

So your father liked to lie to people...hopefully you aren't following in his footsteps.

"X or Y is true because I say so" doesn't count as evidence. Even though this is a public forum and not a court of law or scientific debate, some of us do have standards when it comes to evidence.

there is a saying "if i seem to see further it is because i stand on the shoulders of giants" (not sure who's quote this is). Today's players benefit from the past. By definition Carlsen is the best, because he is the world champ and has the highest rating of all time. He is undefeated as world champ, and before you say Fischer is undefeated a forfeit is a loss. Also, can we stop with Fischer did it ALONE talk. Fischer was GIVEN a spot in the championship tourney (he didn't earn his spot), and Spassky could of refused Fischer's demands after game two retaining the title. Kasparov is probably the strongest over the long haul (considering Carlsen hasn't had the time to compete with Kasparov on this), but let us take into account Karpov made Kasparov better over that first cancelled match (it was like a free trail run for the title). A benefit that Karpov never got from Fischer. Personally, Karpov is my favorite player but is not the strongest of all time. I think Karpov played far enough past his prime that it deminished his legacy, a mistake that Kasparov did not make keeping his legend stronger. Maybe that  is what Fischer got the most right by quitting. I know that all these players are better than i will every be, but that is my two cents on the matter.

In 63 pages, there has been plenty of evidence provided.

Bobby. Fischer. Wasnt. Real! He was a character thought up by the russian government to put up a fight they could crush later to claim superiority in chess. This thread is full of shills trying to hide the conspiracy.

Hahaha! How much was the prize money for the last world chess championship? How much was it before Fischer? He made it possible for thousands of people to persue a professional chess career.

Senior-Lazarus_Long

I remember in the 60's Fischer used to complain that it was almost impossible for anyone in the US to play chess professionally. He said that only Reshevski and himself were able to swing it.He was half right. Reshevski was never able to quit his day job.

Yeah, Fischer helped to usher in the professional age of chess. It's certainly a point in his favor. But if you are counting such things, then his resignation of the title without playing a single game would also have to be counted. He's the only World Champion who didn't defend his title.

Alekhine didn't defend his title the last time, but he had a good excuse.

Morphy?
