Capablanca was dead before Carlsen was born. When did you imagine this match might take place?

AKJett

capa would win because he was born 111 years before me

AKJett

exactly, as i was born on 19/11/1999

Suvel

capablanca

It depends what year the game is played, since I think the living person would have the better chances.

AKJett

of course the dead person will have the better chances

Suvel

yea it all depends on the situation

True. If played in 1930, Capa is the odds-on favorite.

skakmadurinn

it is not possible to compare that

It will be, once I have perfected my time machine. This is me so far:

Here is an actual transcript so far, before the machine melted:

Magnus: Hey. So, how about that Castro fellow? Did you vote for him, or what?

Capablanca: Who?

M: Never mind. So, up for a game?

C: Si. You expand the board to 10x10 yet, as I told you?

M: No.

C: What? So, no new piece that moves like a bishop or a knight?

M: WTF are you on about?

C: Never mind. Draw.

M: You are offering me a draw?

[Here they begin setting up the pieces. I had to interrupt them, because the board was rotated 90 the wrong way, delaying the setup]

C: Predicting, dumbass. Chess is outplayed by your time. Every game is a draw.

M: Yeah? Tell that to Ivanch....

Regrettably, the spokes melted at this point.

Too bad, it could have been an interesting game. Next time, I will set up the board in advance, so they can make some moves.

I don't think you can memorise my time machine. Besides, watch out or I might go set up a match between Kasparov and Fischer next. Remind me to bring a towel for Fischer.

Actually the 1930 version of Capablanca would not be the best one to pick- he himself said he peaked around 1921. It would be weird though because Carlsen is the 21st century equivalent of Capablanca...my money would be on many many interesting endgames and a whole bunch of draws.

JMB2010

Capa said he peaked in 1914, around the st Petersburg tournament.

MrKornKid

I dont know alot about either, watched some youtube video's on their games and both are fun to watch.  I think that Capablanca would come out on top.  Just my opinion eh.

Wow, an Oilers fan. And all the way up in Canada, too! Amazing, especially since they have been defunct for nearly 20 years now. How about that Earl Campbell, eh? And didn't Pastorini throw the ball funny? Always looked like it was hydroplaning.

It would probably be a draw: similar styles, Capa often plays drawish openings (QGD) as does Carlsen (QID), similar strength.

What a great article, Natalia! Of course, I'd say that since GM Gormally's message is identical to the one I've been saying in other threads.
