Allowing qualifications like 'Xiangqi Cannon' seems at odds with the purpose of 'creating consensus about piece naming'. If the names are supposed to apply in only one variant, hardly any conflicts exist. Although in most languages even the orthodox pieces are known under multiple names. We have a Shatranj Elephant (jumps 2 diagonal), a Xiangqi Elephant (moves 2 diagonal without jumping), a Seirawan Elephant (R+N), a Modern Elephant (moves 1 or jumps 2 diagonal), a Musketeer Elephant (moves/jumps 1 or 2 in all 8 directions)...
There furthermore is a deep division between problemists and variantists. There is complete consensus in a large body of problemist literature that B+N is called Princess, and R+N Empress...
Hi friends,
We all know that many chess pieces used in chess variants have the same rules and different names. This is a trial to make te biggest possible consensus on the names, and the corresponding rules.
The aim of this work is to publish an academic article about "Fairy" Chess Pieces, names and rules and also to create a consensus concerning the Fairy pieces Algebraic Notation.
I'll start with these pieces:
B+N = Archbishop, Ar
N+R = Chancellor, Ch
Q+N = Amazon, Am
N+Limited Bishop to 2 squares = Leopard, Le
Xiangqi Cannon = Moves like a Rook, needs to hop over a piece to be able to capture on the square where it lands, XCa
Musketeer Cannon = Guard + Can make Knight moves 1 square vertically and then 2 squares horizontally, Can make also Jumps like Dabbaba, MCa
Ca = Cannon
Dabbaba = Jump 2 squares horizontally or Vertically, D
Hawk = Can jump 2 or 3 squares in any direction (Horizontally Vertically or Diagonally), Ha
Berolina Pawn = capture 1 square forward, move forward 1 sqyare diagonally without capture. Can advance 2 squares diagonally on the first move. En-passant possible. Notation: No mention of a letter, just mention the target square. If 2 pawns can reach the same square, the beginning square column must be precised.
