Difference in variant ratings?

If I go onto "Compare" and compare my ratings with my friends it says my 3-Check Rating is 1396 for example. Whereas if I go onto "Variants" and play a game of 3-Check, it says my rating is 1709.
Why is there a difference between the rating it says on my stats page and the rating is says on my variants page?
