Hatbox Chess

I've created a new chess variant called Hatbox Chess. The rules are the same as normal chess, which means pawns on the 2nd or 7th rank can move 2 squares forward. The thing that's different is the setup. It starts like this, with white to move:

Any advice on how to improve my chess variant?

WOW

Tu variante es excelente, pero creo que en un tablero de ajedrez una de las cosas más importantes es el espacio entre blancas y negras al principio de la partida.

Igualmente es increible la variante. Si yo estuviese en tu lugar no cambiaria nadahappy.png

This is totally lost for black, right? The Queens stand as much chance as a snowball in hell. First you trade the Pawns away. (Ssince even your fist line already has 14 vs 10, you can afford to sacrifice some to speed up that process; e.g. c6 and f6 seem good starting moves.) After that the King and Queens are cannon fodder for your Knights, which you will trade 1 on 1.

I make a bot with 3200 rating play with itself, and the result is a win for white.

Well, one game of course doesn't prove much, but at least it demonstrates what I predicted.

You should furthermore be a bit careful assuming a bot has a certain Elo, in such unusual situations. When you say "you made a bot with 3200 rating" it already begs questions. What do you mean by 'made'? Use Stockfish, or another top engine from a rating list for normal Chess?

Such engines are usually tuned on normal positions as the can occur in FIDE games, and can play moronically stupid in crazy positions. I remember Crafty would consistently lose with 3 Queens from 6 Knights, (from a 500 Elo weaker opponent engine!), because it refused to trade a Queen for 2 Knights when it had the opportunity, and then finally had to trade it for a single Knight to avoid an immediate checkmate. So Elo could mean zilch, in situations like this.

Would you like playing this game against a high rated bot with you being white? I did it and I lost

Hm looks cool but a bit unbalanced I think. White has a sizeable advantage in the starting position.

Here's the game

At first glance some may think that black is winning on material

but then the queen’s advantage is its range, which won’t work on such a crowded board...

The coordination of the pieces is also a thing, white would happily trade 3 knights for 2 queen when the knights form a chain

The queen just can’t break through
