Waiting for my friend (@King_Red_A) to join the game.
I hope this friendly game will show all the mechanics of Impulschach in action.
Impulschach
Hi, can I play d4 to start the game? I’m interested this variant but also a bit confused by all the new rules.
Hi, can I play d4 to start the game? I’m interested this variant but also a bit confused by all the new rules.
Let's do it!
@Pokshtya: 1. ...Cc6 (e5, a5, Ie7 (aa3, bc3, cd3, dc5, ee3, fg3, gh3))
First I played Catalyst on c6. It activated two of my pawns and Impulse. By playing my Impulse I started a chain reaction of displacement of your pawns. I began to shift them one by one, starting from the a - file (in brackets after the Impulse move their shift is indicated).
I think, as you showed, I'll play Impulse to h5 (hh6, gf6, fe6, ee4, dd6, cb6, aa4, ba4). I believe this now "checks" (though it doesn't exist) the king due to the moved f-pawn.
to @Forktopus
Yes, that's correct. We move the Impulse and then manipulate the opponent's pawns. Pay attention to the fact that the more moves we make with the Impulse, the closer we push the enemy pawns to our own first rank. This can be dangerous for us. That's why, for example, an opening like 1. Cc3 (e4, a4, Ih5 (hh6, gf6, fe6, ed6, dc6, cb6, ba6) isn't entirely appropriate.
White does not have an attack here, as it might seem at first glance. These are not standard chess, and everything that seems standard in this variant carries a completely different weight.
Back to our game.
2. ...If7 (hh4, hh3, gg4, ef4, dc4, cb4)
Please pay attention to the fact that Impulses are not allowed to capture one another. This is prohibited by the rules.
You forgot to displace the black pawn a4.
Since this pawn can only be moved to one single free square (b3), we have the following position after Ig6 (ab3, aa5, bb5, dd5, ee3, ee5, ff5, hh5) :
My friend, if you are tired of recording all the pawn movements, then you don't have to do it. Our game is not competitive, but demonstrative. All you have to do is post the position and indicate which piece you played. I will take care of recording the moves in the game ;)
oh i thought the a4 pawn had no legal moves sry
Impulse takes g8 (aa4, bb2, dd4, ee4, ee2) and i think the other pawns don't have legal moves
Here is the position after your move:
Just a reminder: After completing its move, the Impulse immediately displaces all of the opponent's pawns. Each pawn is displaced in the direction of its natural movement towards promotion by one square: straight forward or forward diagonally. Thus, one pawn can be moved straight forward, another forward diagonally and so on. In each specific case, the player decides in which of the three directions (straight, diagonally left or right) to move a particular opponent's pawn.

Impulschach: A Chess Variant of Chain Reactions
The goal is simple, but the path to victory is anything but.
The Goal
Win instantly by either:
1. Capturing the opponent's King.
2. Forcing an opponent's pawn onto your royal square (e1 for White, e8 for Black) using the Impulse's ability.
No Check, No Mate
Forget everything you know about check and checkmate. They don't exist here. There is also no castling and no en passant. You can simply capture the king if it's left undefended.
The Special Pieces
You start with the standard setup, but your Queen and both Knights are replaced.
The Impulse (I)
Movement: Moves and captures like a standard Queen.
Ability - Resonance Shift: After the Impulse moves, it immediately shifts all of your opponent's pawns.
Each pawn is shifted one square towards its promotion rank (straight or diagonally forward) onto an empty square. If no move is possible, it stays.
Pawns are processed by file, from left-to-right or right-to-left, your choice.
If an opponent's pawn reaches your first rank (1st for White, 8th for Black), it transforms into your piece based on its file: a-file/h-file -> Rook; b-file/g-file -> Catalyst; c-file/f-file -> Bishop; d-file -> Impulse; e-file -> YOU WIN INSTANTLY.
The Catalyst (C)
Movement: Moves and captures like a standard Knight.
Ability - Synchronization: After the Catalyst moves, if it attacks any of your own pieces (except another Catalyst), those pieces are activated.
You may then make one extra move with each activated piece, in any order you choose. If a piece has no legal move, it is skipped.
This can create powerful chains. For example, activating your Impulse allows you to move it and trigger its full Resonance Shift ability.
Notes
The Impulses cannot capture each other. This ensures the game's core mechanic remains active.
With two Catalysts, board awareness is crucial. Be careful not to block their "line of sight" to your own pieces with your other units!
This is a game of improvisation, not memorization. You must react to the ever-changing board state created by chain reactions.
