people post all kinds of things about Bulldog chess over and over and over and nobody is singling them out for advertising, despite “repeatedly calling attention” to that game.

There are always a few Bulldog topics active in the Variants forum. In almost all cases these topics are meant to be about Bulldog from OP. It rarely happens (well, less often than the events in which you hijack topics) that a topic on another subjects gets hijacked, by somebody trying to divert the attention to Bulldog. This is an important detail that you fail to bring up.

Chess.com's Variants feature is a great idea, and I really like the addition of it, but why is there literally no one playing every time I try to play? There were only 181 players across all variants when I logged on today. How is that even possible with a site with more than 70 million members? I'm confused.

Even the more "popular" variants like Atomic only had approximately 10 people playing.

Perhaps Variants is still in beta, but even so, something feels wrong. Let me know, guys!

Did you count the people playing 4 player chess? There are sometimes over 400 people playing 4pc at the same time (with 800 people spectating the games)!

yeah, but that's still only a few hundred. I guess I'm just surprised at how little interest there is in these variants

I'm not surprised so much. This is mostly a place for chess players. Chess  players do not like variants, some can even be very agressive against this. For many of them it is a lost of time, or simply an heresy. Personally, I love to be an heretic :=)

I do play almost exclusively Orthodox Shatranj (i.e. Chaturanga) which is the original game of Chess, however I do not deny the importance of the 'Mad Queen variant' (the so-called 'standard' Chess). The most played 'variant' in the world is the 'Elephant Chinese Chess': XiangQi.

So who's the heretic?? Hard to say!

Samuel, tu es un hérétique coupable de croire à l'ancienne foi. Et je devine que tu n'as pas lu L'Odyssée des jeux d'échecs, ce qui mérite le châtiment suprême.

Molto bene. Posso scrivere un poco in italiano. Ho migliore que l'Odyssée des jeux d'échecs. è A World Of Chess, perché ho scritto questo libro sei anni dopo del primo, con più data, giochi, etc. Se devi scegliere un regalo, il secondo sarà migliore forse.

It amazes me how so many people don’t understand what advertising is. So let me offer some insight.

1. something has to be for sale.

2. a payment is made to the media host

Like I said, people post all kinds of things about Bulldog chess over and over and over and nobody is singling them out for advertising, despite “repeatedly calling attention” to that game.

So don’t get on your high horse and tell me that’s what I’m doing, because it isn’t, no matter how many times you say otherwise.

ads don't need to have money involved for it to be an ad, you can see some ads for games that you can download for free but they're still ads regardless if you need to pay money to get it or not

on the main topic I remember seeing up to over 40 people playing fog of war when it was released and now there's barely any sad.png I think it may have to do with lesser people playing and then others stop due to lack of people to play

Avatar of sleepingpuppy

yeah

Avatar of sleepingpuppy

quite sad how the variants rating can only be seen on the variants page

Avatar of sleepingpuppy

I have 1.7k rating in 2 variants but the rating I got in live chess shows on my profile sad.png

popularity just dies out basically

makes sense, but I do think there should be a "minimum-point" where a certain amount of players just do not drop out. Not sure why that's not really the case here

I feel kinda sorry for people  who make chess variants and have no one play them

Avatar of carnageisreal

there might be a few blogs on chess.com about this topic

Wow great (and fast) !

It's cool how Gothic pieces often mate the opposing King without 'touching' it.

I'm not much good at it however I had fun in this one:

I like all Chess variants but lately I tend to focus on Shatranj/Chaturanga. Gothic Chess is interesting too, quite an opposite concept though, the two are in fact: the ancient, less tactical, Chess and the hyper-modern, hyper-tactical, Chess.

However the basic movements in Ancient Chess are 4, not just 3 like in modern Chess, so if we had to apply the 'Gothic method' to Shatranj we'd have 6 new pieces:

  • Farzin-Alfil
  • Farzin-Knight
  • Farzin-Rook
  • Alfil-Knight
  • Alfil-Rook
  • Knight-Rook

I LOVE 3 check but no one plays it sad.png (almost no one)

I have been playing chess , with an extra 1/2 board on one side, along wth 2 extra rooks, and 2 extra knights ,and now regular chess is actually quite boring to me.  The games become much more complex , and very quickly too. This  variant usualy results in a longer ,more intense game , which is  almost always more satisfying .  I am hoping this will be THE variant that will catch on, not only because I am sure it is a better game, but because it is easier to learn than other variants since all the pieces and rules are the same as standard chess.  All one needs to try it at home is two games of chess with equal size boards, with one that folds in 1/2 . Or if they are very flat , you could just slip 1/2 of one under the other.

I have set up the two rooks beside each other in the corners , and the knights beside each other ,next to the rooks  as in standard chess.  I think this is best since the rooks can protect each other best, and so can the knights.

I hope some of you will give it a try, so maybe we will see it here on this site, unless I create my own.
