Resizing board in variants

Is it possible to resize the board in variants ?
I'm perfectly capable of doing it for standard chess with the resize icon, but this icon does not appear when I'm playing variants.
It seems variants have a fixed size (too big!) board.
I understand that 4 chess or gothic needs to take all the space, but atomic or 3 checks for instance are just same board and pieces than standard, so there should be no issue resizing.
The theme colors also do not seem to apply, I'm forced to play the green/yellow default...
