Hi, game will start tomorrow.

Ry, can you find my second game with cat and mouse please? It will save me making a post regarding how the pieces move.

Mouse - moves like a rook, can only capture the enemy mouse, and only then if it's on an adjacent square, ie captures like a king.

The mouse "scares" enemy pieces next to it, with the exception of the cat and mouse.

A piece that is "scared" (ie next to an enemy mouse) cannot capture, and cannot deliver check. It can move but only to a vacant square (eek a mouse, run away!).

Circles represent capture squares, and the location of enemy pieces that would be "scared". Arrows represent squares the mouse can move to,

Cat - moves by jumping two squares or like a knight.

Captures like a king. The cat can capture any enemy piece, and can deliver check. The cat is not afraid of the mouse, and as such is unaffected being next to it.

The cat cannot capture when jumping, and cannot move to a vacant adjacent square..

Circles represent capture squares, arrows represent jump squares.

Castling - same, except king moves three whichever way it goes. King cannot move through check, but a "scared" piece cannot deliver check, and therefore cannot stop castling (unless it's directly in the way).

En passant - same as classic chess.

Promotion - pawns can promote to cat or mouse if desired.

Who's white? If you want me to toss a coin, that's fine.

Mouse - b1 and i8 - apologies for the not-very-mousey piece, it becomes more mousey if you imagine it's Speedy Gonzales.

Good luck to both!

King's

Cat and mouse are both very powerful pieces. Remember that I won a game that simplified into cat vs queen after I blundered the queen. I would say the cat is close to a rook in power, while the mouse is also in that ball park. The cat is certainly better than a guard, it has the same capturing power but a lot more mobility. The mouse is also powerful piece that compliments an attack very nicely, though it won't be as effective in endgame.

I would probably give the cat a value of slightly above 5, and the mouse slightly below 5, so basically I wouldn't give up the cat for a rook, but I probably would the mouse, unless the mouse could compliment an imminent attack.

I assume it's rated unless you both agree otherwise.

Well it's not up to me, but you shouldn't be afraid to lose rating points. Also, I would have to question the method if such swings are possible. My gameknot rating, I think I lose 20 points max if I lose to a much lower rated player. The provisional ratings were a little more swingy, so maybe that's why. idk, but to be honest I don't care about my rating. Everyone knows I'm a strong player, everyone knows I'm not as good as Martin.  I suspect myself, you, auk and holo are relatively well matched, with me slightly ahead I think. If you lose 90 points here, that opinion doesn't change.

I hate to intervene, but I think a discussion in the bulldog federation said that games with new pieces are never rated until they have been played at least once. The main reason is to help make sure all the rules are clear and non-ambiguous. But if this game has already been played then it can be rated.

In this event, my rating might be wrong, and FEF's. I'm sure our two games of cat and mouse were rated, and it should be noted that the cat was tweaked after one game due to it being a less effective piece than hoped.

This is certainly the second game of this format though, so no problem here.

Updating board now...

Score - =0

Avatar of captaintugwash

I'll add a score to each board at the bottom. This is for material reference only and shouldn't be taken as an indication of who has the better position. Further, the score is always in reference to white, so a score of -1 means black has a material advantage.

I'm assuming 3 points for both bishop and knight, 4 points for the mouse, 5 points for the cat.
