Bulldog chess with zombie!?!

Ok, I thought of a new variant in Bulldog Chess. A 8x12 chessboard with extra 4 knights, 8 pawns, and 4 zombies.

Just 2 things: zombies move forward, backward, left or right 1-2 squares, and castleling. Others are the same.

Got it?

Zombies are slow-moving so probably can't jump, right? That means it might be a little weaker than a knight (attacks same number of squares, but can't jump). That could be an interesting piece.

Here's a board with some zombies, just to see a possible graphic.

If I play you later in the bulldog tournament, maybe we can have the zombie in a game. But I think I would prefer a 10x8 board (just to keep it similar to other games in the tournament). We'll see how it goes.happy.png

I mean, without witch and with bulldog.

So, can we add it at semifinals?

Where's the best place for ghouls and bulldogs? Does this look OK?

Pieces of the same army can move past a bulldog, so ghouls and rooks can come into play right away. I think it's a good setup. If you and someone else want it can be played in the tournament. Maybe I'll play it, but first I have to get past my game with evert.happy.png

this looks ok, almost same as I thought

just b and i lines are pawns, not bulldogs

Right. The zombie I thought is a little less scarier, so when I saw the graphics I seem a little suprised.

(P.S.: why did vickalan said zombie into ghouls?)

?

"Ghouls" sounds better. It's also a bit more "Medieval".

talk about it later. Chess was invented ant 1200C.E., not World War II.

I meant zombies. I get confused between zombies and ghouls.

In the old movie Night of the Living Dead they're ghouls, but either name can be used I think. They attack without too much concern for their own safety - they walk straight toward someone with a club or a gun.meh.png

I like the idea of zombies in a game, and since they can't jump, they go together well with a bulldog. This will let them come out in the game early. Zombies are probably worth less than a knight, so like for real zombies they can attack without too much concern for being exchanged.happy.png

2 pts?

Actaully, you can add ghoul, but zombie too.

Here I used kings as zombies. The white zombie can move b4, c4, e4, f4, d2, d3, d5, and d6. But he gets captured at e4 and d6.

Ghoul:

Here I used kings as ghouls. The white ghoul is attacked, so he moves to d4 or b4 and scares the knight.

Also, some diagram should show that zombies can't jump. In the example below, White's zombies can "slide" on the red arrows, but Black's bishop on d5 is safe.

This is why zombies are probably worth less than a knight. Friedmelon's estimate of 2 points might be a good guess. I like the idea of a zombie, because it represents a "missing" piece between the value of a pawn and a knight. Just like real zombies, they can attack without too much concern for their own safety.

Also, any piece of a bulldog's own color can move right past a bulldog. So zombies and rooks can come into play right away. Black's rook for example can attack white's bulldog on j3. But this bulldog is protected both by the other bulldog, and his own rook.

I think this variation of bulldog can have very interesting strategic play, and I hope to try it sometime.happy.png

So?

Here, the black ghoul can move up 2 spaces then scare the rook. Now it's a double attack!

Then its stalematehappy.png

all white pieces can't move, so draw.

Avatar of friedmelon

It can only scare one at a time?
