I just realized the very important fact that the chancellors guard the middle rearward pawns in the starting position.

Yes, even when the hawk leaves its Jäger unit, the pawns still often have some defense.

I’m beginning to realize just how powerful hawks are.
captaintugwash

Thanks.

I thought you'd save the bishop and trade hawk for chancellor. Obviously the chancellor is more powerful than the hawk, but is that difference in power worth a whole bishop? An interesting decision.

I say yes. 13.K(0,6)

You might be correct. Personally I'd have given up the chancellor, simply because I have two of them. You only have one black squared bishop, now my bsb is more powerful. But my evaluation might be flawed, I haven't even begun to explore the chancellor so I might agree with you later.

hitthepin
Now, chancellor, I saved you, so I’m expecting great things!

So much so that I'm not that interested in capturing your rook, which I could do with another hawk fork. I think the hawk is better, certainly at the moment it is. Probably  when there's less pawns the rooks are better.

I obviously capture the chancellor with my hawk if you allow it though, even though I would be sad to part with a hawk.

Waiting for board.

I'll apply hitthepin's move as K(6,0). Please make sure moves are always declared as (file first, then rank). If declared wrong but legal it could be a bad blunder.shock.png
