I've invented variants for a while now. Do my past work count? If so, am I allowd to post just one, or can I do multiple? ^-^
Chess Variant Contest
I have the same question as the previous poster. If previous designs are allowed, I would like to submit Werewolf Chess as this week's entry:
Setup
Rules
The Werewolf moves as a Queen, but only over a distance of maximally 3 squares. In addition it can also jump directly to the second square in any of the 8 directions if the first square is occupied. (So you could start a game by 1.Wf3, but not by 1.Wg4.) If it jumps over an enemy piece this way, this piece can be optionally captured, possibly in addition to what is captured on the square where the Werewolf ends.
But the most important thing is that any non-royal piece that captures a Werewolf instanty turns into one: the capturing piece is removed, and the Werewolf replaced by a Werewolf of the opposite color. (In a set with spare Queens you could do this by representing the Werewolf by a Queen piece.)
Pawns promote to Rook, Bishop or Knight on reaching the last rank, but not to Queen. They can only promote to Werewolf on capturing one (on the last rank or elsewhere). Otherwise all rules are as in orthodox Chess.
Motivation
In my opinion Chess variants must be made not just for the sake of being different, but to address a problem perceived in existing variants. Werewolf Chess is an attempt to repair the weakness of orthodox Chess that the latter gets a pretty dull game after an early trade of the dominating super-piece, the Queen. The promotion-to-Werewolf rule effectively dicourages its trading, as it guarantees survival of at least one Werewolf in any tactics that involve Werewolfs and do not involve a King. And the Kings usually get involved in tactics only quite late in the game.
Deployment chess-
All other rules are same as chess but at the start of the game players can place their pieces anywhere within the first 3 ranks.
First to be placed are Knights then Bishops then rooks then Queens then pawns then Kings. Pawns can't be placed on the 1st rank and a pawn can only jump 2 steps if it's on the 2nd rank. Bishops have to be on opposite colors and Kings can't Castle

Here's a simple one of mine. I don't have a name for it.
The game uses a 10x10 board.
Each player has a row of pawns on the third rank.
Each player's back rank is set up thus:
RWBTPKTBWR
The two back ranks are rotationally symmetric.
R = Rook
B = Bishop
W = Warrior - moves one or two steps as a rook and may change direction after the first move but may not return to its starting square and must stop immediately upon capturing
T = Titan - a diagonal warrior
P = Prince - makes one or two steps; one straight, and one diagonal; either may come first; must stop upon capturing
K = King - may not castle
Pawns have an initial double step, may capture en passant, and promote on the back rank to any piece.
This is really a small modification of an older game I thought of. The setup and the pawn rules are different. The original purpose of the game was to design a game for the 100 square board with a coherent piece set. The biggest problem with the original design was the pawns. They followed a rather weird rule that allowed them to advance as far as the farthest advanced friendly piece. I now believe that slow pawns separated by only three or four ranks are better. Fast pawns just don't work well on a square board.

I thought you already had your judges set before you started this thread.
Regardless, I think we have to play the games first in order to rate them a score. Variants sound intriguing, but may turn out to not work well when in play.
With that said, it would be hard to receive scores, because I'm sure most people wouldn't have the time and energy to test out these variants. Unless you have an actual deadline? (See, this contest was supposed to be over more than two weeks ago, wasn't it?)

I play with pleasure any 10x10 chess. If BC with NASA, McDonalds and Hollywood vouch for the informational support (diagrams) we can start at new topic «Martian chess» in honour of Edgar Rice Burroughs. I know only one good Judge at America: Arnold Schwarzenegger.

I'm sure that game of mine could easily be improved. Some of the pawns are undefended, and it would probably be better with a pair of knights added somewhere.

Demotion Chess
If a piece is captured, then the captured side has to demote a piece.
If it's left with a lone king, then the capturer wins.
Amazon (Q+N) --> Queen --> Chancellor (R+N) --> Princess (B+N) --> Rook --> Bishop --> Knight --> Guard (Not royal king) --> Pawn --> Nothing (The pawn is removed)

yeah, so if u give me his number i'll call the terminator to come judge

click add post then click the chessboard then click diagram then drag your pieces across the board to make your diagram then click send

there are only three posts but my favorite is werewolf chess because the maker thought through the pieces and location and stuff. Runner up is Demotion chess. Sorry close chess because i dont rly get what you mean, can you post a diagram for it please? the winner and runner up will win a trophy. IF anyone wants to start a new contest next week please tell me.
welcome to the one and only Chess Variant Contest! You need to make a chess variant by yourself and then post it on this thread. Three judges each week will choose the BEST variant posted during the week. Winner of the week gets trophy from me. I'll start!
