How's that for an epic question? I'm sorry but there's virtually nothing available in English for shogi apart from the basics, ie initially build a fortress for you king, defend with 3 generals, use your rook, bishop, silver and knight to attack. Beyond that vague advice I'm pretty much on my own. I look out for obvious tactical things like forks, and I'll see if there's any way of promoting a piece of mine, or if I can prevent the opponent from promoting a piece.
I have downloaded a list of "shogi proverbs" but almost all of them are too philosophical to be of much use "1 pawn is worth a thousand Golds" etc.
If anyone would like to write up a 50 page essay of shogi strategy just for me that would be great! But I can hardly expect that so I would appreciate, well, basically any advice on strategy.
What do you actually do doing the middlegame?
