Another way of putting it is that h1 is a black, rather than a white, square.

I don't understand. If the pieces still move the same way (white toward the top, black toward the bottom), none of the pawns can move, and all the other pieces (except the knights) are blocked behind the pawns. If the pieces move toward each other, than it's just Chess with a different set up.
