Nice one Stig, I hate that Scandanavian.
The Database of Variants

shogi, xiangqi, seirawan chess, progressive chess, 3 dimensional chess, dark chess, blindfold chess, 'Weak!', bughouse, pairs

No variants (like ... suicide chess) not openings ...
I felt the your term suicide chess "may" point at my example of variant/opening line
In case it did, I edited my previous post and added a game example where I used the beginning of the opening line presented.
Nice one Stig, I hate that Scandanavian.
I never play The Scandinavian as black, except when I am very bored of playing blitz- and bullet games of chess.
Do you hate The Scandinavian in general, my gambit variant especially - or me who actually is a Scandinavian???!
Well hate is a strong word, I mean I dont like playing white against the Scandanavian.
Scandanavians seem a very pleasant, polite and well educated group.

Here's a massive list to start you off: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_variant

We're all using the internet, Chester.
No one else have contributed in this thread. Perhaps you ought to explain.
What is your understanding of variants?
You mix up 'variant' with 'variation'. A variation is a sequence of moves (as in an opening line). A variant is a game with rules that differ from FIDE Chess, but are still sufficiently Chess-like to be not considered a completely independent game.
Blindfold Chess is not really a variant, just a different mode of playing.
I know most others on the list (except 'weak' and pairs); 3D Chess isn't really a well-defined variant; there are many forms of 3D Chess. I don't really understand the point of limiting us to the given list; it seems rather arbitrary. For instance, Makruk, which is one of the World's major Chess variants (played by millions, in Thailand) and Jiangi (idem in Korea) are not listed. Chu Shogi is an ancient form of Shogi that is still widely played in Japan. A lot of 'Western' variants with a large player base (Omega Chess, Seirawan Chess, Gothic Chess) are also missing.
I would like you to post all the variants of chess you know that are in this list.
