I think I'll just castle."

"I think I'm winning here ... *one move later* Ugh. I totally misplayed this. I'm not happy with my position at all."

+1 This is gold; best @Hikaru impression I've seen typed out in a while. As for voice impressions, I like many from @GothamChess (IM Levy Rozman) in this video (he also does Nakamura)...

Carlsen doesn't stream for instruction... but neither does Hikaru.

But if you find him entertaining, that's great.

I don't think Carlsen particularly likes teaching. Here's his "Rule of the Square" instructional video, which easily qualifies for the least enthusiastic instructional chess video I've ever seen:

It felt like a contract obligation. Lol.

That's hilarious...

lol Leko. I never noticed it's like he's always shouting.

He's really good at impersonations, that's impressive.

I saw that Carlsen video months ago - I could see how he didn't know this rule. To be fair, it isn't too difficult to calculate if the King can reach the pawn in time without knowing this rule. What I find impressive is that Carlsen went THIS long without knowing that concept by name so he was just playing these endgames off of calculation and intuition - that might be even more impressive!

but yeah it was kind of funny how he didn't even know it xD

grin.png agadmator impression is spot on too lol

Also notice Anish Giri's "training" ended in draw by stalemate xD

Hikaru gets a lot of hate, for whatever reasons, but I find him quite entertaining to watch. And often instructive, to see the lines and tactics that he considers.

By contrast, whenever I watch Carlsen stream his games (Banter Blitz, for example), I find it a bit dry and boring (and not particularly instructive). Which is kind of disappointing.

Watch Naroditsky if you want instruction.  Carlsen and Nakamura are a little too self-centered to be good teachers.  A decent enough quality for individual achievement, but not for communicating ideas to others.

lol so true, but maybe that isn't "much" thinking for him... "much thinking" would be like 30 arrows and arrows overlapping arrows! xD

It was interesting seeing him take the chess personality test. One question was along the lines of "would you calculate or play by intuition?"

His answer was I'd calculate this, and this, and this... so yeah, my answer is I'd play by intuition. tongue.png

I guess it's because at a high level you always calculate something... so to solve something by calculation means to solve it to the end... otherwise it's not "real" calculation I guess. In other words, seeing 10 moves ahead is just some preliminary checking... which as impressive as that might sound, also makes a lot of sense, because a 10 move variation in a blitz game is always going to contain some BS.

That video is awesome. His Leko and Giri impersonations had me laughing. They were all pretty excellent. Too bad he didn't do a Carlsen one, too. grin.png

How to talk like a chess streamer:

”takes, takes, takes, takes, castles, takes, takes, check, takes, takes, pin, takes, bongcloud.”

JackRoach

Takes Takes there there here there king here rook over there and then that sets a trap if he moves there then I win a pawn due to the pin.

If he does the right move then after takes takes there here I am slightly better.

All in one breath.
