One of my favorite openings but one I still need to master:
The Petroff Defense, also known as the Russian Defense, is a chess opening for Black that starts with the moves 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6. Instead of defending the e5-pawn, Black counterattacks White's e4-pawn with their knight.

🤯 3 tips to instantly play better 🤯

1) Blunder-check before every move (10-second scan)
• Ask two questions:
1. “What are their checks, captures, or threats if I make my move?”
2. “After my move, is anything of mine left undefended or is my king exposed?”
• If you see a great capture, double-check that you’re not walking into mate or a tactic.

😱 Fun fact: Even ex-World Champion Vladimir Kramnik once missed a mate-in-one against a computer (Deep Fritz, 2006). Super-GMs blunder too—so checking is smart, not “slow.”

2) The 3-step opening plan (C-P-K)
• C = Center: Try to control or occupy e4/d4 (as White) or e5/d5 (as Black).
• P = Pieces: Develop knights and bishops before moving the same piece twice.
• K = King: Castle early so your rook joins the game and your king is safe.

🧐 Fun fact: Most scholastic losses come from delaying castling—get safe first, attack second.

3) Count attackers & defenders (“+1 rule”)
• If you put a piece on a square, count how many of your pieces defend it vs. how many of theirs attack it.
• Aim for at least one extra defender (you +1). If it’s equal or worse, tactics often fail.

🤓 Fun fact: Many “brilliant” tactics are just good math—one extra defender or attacker wins material without any fancy tricks.

⚡️⚡️ How to use these in real games ⚡️⚡️
• Before each move, say out loud (or in your head): “Checks, captures, threats… center, pieces, king… count!”
• After the game, write one sentence: “The turning point was ___ because I forgot/did ___.” This builds awareness fast.

Sorry, there’s a text limit on the posts but you didn’t miss anything after the cutoff “…” other than this builds your focus after a game.

I heard that if you play Scholar’s Mate correctly you will win 99% of games. True or False? Bring facts not opinion please…
Avatar of Forsaken

False. BAREKY anyone falls for scholars mate.

Scholar’s mate works 99%. And there are deep lines for those who know it!
Avatar of Forsaken

Well idk, I just don’t study scholars opening.

Avatar of Stef78787878
All cool. 😎. If you know the lines really well, you can easily beat it but there are a lot of traps. 🪤 we might set up a tourny based on the opening where one side has to play it as an opening. Sound fun?
