Shakje, I will try and give you a definition of swearing.
Swearing is the misuse of holy words (we call this blasphemy), or the use of base, sexually or physically explicit language that will insult or outrage those we direct the words at, or others that hear us.
As such words become accepted they loose their shock value and other words need to be used in their place. When we do this we debase our language because we loose the original meaning of the new word we use.
I do not normally swear I do not need to. If I want to insult someone I can find much more entertaining ways to do it, mainly by the use of more “wordy” language, after all anyone can say “**** *** *** ****”. It is much more entertaining to say something like “you are such a nincompoop” (a 17th century word that is not pleasant when you read up how it was used and what it relates to), and watch the other person not know how much you have insulted them, as they laugh at what you have said.
The advantage this gives me is that when I do swear it has the desired effect and causes those who know me to be shocked; their reaction is then picked up by the person I have sworn at, who then knows that if they continue my next move will be to hit them. As a result I have avoided many situations where I have seen others end up in fights.
PS. the blasphemy bit is just to put it all in perspective for me
Just thought I'd add my 2p(/c) on this as it's something that always interests me. I can see the appeal of an adults only group, even if it does just seem a way to exclude kids, I think it would be nice to have somewhere where everyone can behave like intelligent people witih open minds who aren't particularly bothered about worrying when they feel the need to express themselves using swearing. Personally (I was raised Glaswegian, so that might be the reason), my experience is that kids already know every swear word going before adults do, and making it a complete taboo (as generally appears to be the case with a lot of things) makes it more forbidden and means they're happier to use it to excess instead of just using it as a language tool for increasing emphasis or describing things in a unique way.
Personally, while I'm quite happy to respect people's views, I have a lot more respect for them if they can explain them, and I've never met someone yet who could either give me a decent definition of a swear word and a reason as to why they are considered bad which covers all swear words, or perceived swear words, and doesn't conflict with their own views on certain words. Or for that, why there are different levels of swear word in terms of good and bad, or why some words are acceptable and some aren't. I'm quite happy to debate it either here or in PMs if anyone is interested and happy to listen to responses and not just talk at me (blasphemy I can understand by the way, even if I don't have any real religious leanings).
