How are they even allowed to draw after only 16 moves? This doesn't seem right at all. The game should have been declared invalid and redone from the beginning.

They are allowed because, unsurprisingly, the players get to choose their moves.

Obviously but perhaps the 3 move rule should be disabled for the first couple of moves or something.

if they both agree it is a draw there are no acceptable rules to be made to prevent them drawing.

Obviously but perhaps the 3 move rule should be disabled for the first couple of moves or something. Then of course you can perhaps repeat a move 20 times to get to it, which would need to be addressed.

All I'm saying is it doesn't seem right they can get out of the game in such a position at the beginning.

Well, threefold repetition is disabled for the first couple of moves by its nature.

At the point the player have to decide between playing a move which can repeat, or giving themselves a worse position. What choice do you expect them to make?

And yes, you've refuted your own idea. If it repeats 3 times, they can repeat it 20, and what have you achieved?

Watching the press conference, Anand seems to be in a really good mood and Magnus just seems pissed off. Psychological 1-0 for Anand I´d say.

Welcome to the 12 game championship format where not losing is all that matters.

I felt this before the match and am even more certain of it now. Since this is Carlsens first match I think it will take until past the first 2 rest days before he can start concentrating well. Vishys been here plenty. I think it'll be game 5 before it starts getting good.

You're incredibly smart.

jeanurg

what do you think about carlsen's opening with Nf3?

Welcome to chess where drawing is preferable to working hard to give yourself a worse position just so the game carries on and fans wont moan.

yah ...i think so

Exactly, Damon. Magnus also started the Candidates with 2 draws, against Aronian and Kramnik; then he got going.

I'm OK with "short draws don't count." Some of us wanted a longer match in the first place

So you want it like it was with Kasparov-Karpov: 6 wins win the match. But then again, that match had to be canceled because it was not coming to an end.

jeanurg

i think that Magnus could be happy with equality;because the black opening was so good

Thanks, I'm sure you might have considered that if you gave your idea any thought whatsoever.

Carlsen said he wasn't thrilled with the result and it's clear he was annoyed that the game was only 15 moves long. He also said he that he hopes the next game is longer than an hour and a half. When asked if he was surpirsed at the lenght of the game he said that he played some embarrassing draws as white during the candidates. So what I take from this is Carlsen will definitely play for the win whenever he gets the slightest chance. However Anand said that the result was satisfactory and it was a comfortable draw with the black pieces. This indicates to me that Anand is happy to simply defend his title in a more passive manner. I mean in the sense that he is not going to try push boundaries against a player of Carlsen's strenght.

Haven't read all this thread yet, in case it's mentioned later, but the iPad app worked great. No problems with video.

Scottrf, I already said myself that we would need to address 20-fold repetitions if we were to disable the 3-move rule for the beginning. Observing that I said this is not a "refutation" of what I wrote. You added nothing.

One trivial solution would be to declare games with 3-fold repetitions below a certain threshold of moves played to be invalid and force the players to redo them.

You are wrong. It's the fact that Anand had the black pieces, which made him happy to make a short and comfortable draw, while Carlsen had white. And with white, you should go for a win.

good point.  carlsen was looking nervous. it will get some time to settle the nerves. but it was a cake walk for anand and a very good moral booster having a drawn in 15 against carlsen with black. he was ahead on board but he didnt continued.

Call it whatever you want. The fact is that trying to win is basically suicide now. I hope this one doesn't get dragged out into blitz but that's probably wishful thinking.
