I read one where Alekhine was on a train, and was challenged to a game by a stranger. Alekhine immediately offered to give him rook odds.
The man said "What makes you think you can give me rook odds? You don't know who i am!"
Alekhine answered "My good Sir, if I could not defeat you with rook odds, I would KNOW who you are!"
I have heard that anecdote, but it was Capablanca not Alekhine.
Which makes me think now it is likely made up.

Alex I think of as the pompous one. Rarely bothering to bring his nose out of the air long enough to even speak us mere mortals.

I think.
When I read Capablanca, he comes across with such an air of superiority that pomposity is the only word that fits.
That might be why Capa and Alekhine were apparently not overly fond of each other.
