Ahoy guys! I suppose yall have seen a lots of questions about average rating on this site. And they all say about 1200. Thats the average rating on this site. But there is one thing... a catch...

We all start with 1200. Thats the main reason for that small average rating. If we all would start with 1600, average rating would be 1600. But noone gets this. So stop bothering everybody with that kinds of questions WHAT IS THE AVERAGE RATING ON THIS SITE!

This is indeed confusing! Isn't the rating changes a zero sum game (i.e. "if you win two pints, the your opponent loses two points")? If so, then the average rating should be a flat 1200.

When I look for open games it is really easy to find players between 1300-1500, but as you go above that they start becoming more rare. It would be my assumption that the average falls somewhere in that range.

In the Glicko system the rating change is not the same (but opposite) for both players. Depends on the RD of each player. This is why high rated players may not play low rated players. They lose rating points for a loss but may gain none for a win. (Minimum one point gain no longer applies on the site.)

" if you have a big RD, then your rating can move up and down more drastically because your rating is less accurate. But if you have a small RD then your rating will move up and down more slowly because your rating is more accurate. The opposite is true for your opponent! If they have a HIGH RD, then your rating will change LESS when you win or lose because their rating is less accurate. But if they have a LOW RD, then your rating will move MORE because their rating is more accurate."

JRadis

People delete their accounts. And most of the accounts deleted are under 1200. Thats why...

Sorry, I missread your original question. I thought you asked about the current average rating. My misstake. Sorry.

Which method of computing the average are we talking about here?

What is the average rating of active members and players and why do they start with 1200 when it could be 0 or 2000. I say that we cant talk about average rating on this site couse of the fact that 1200 is the beggining, and not some other number. And that number makes the average

Politicalmusic

You can avoid a low average by playing one person first (beating them) and then always doing a seek with your rating being the floor.

When we use average rating, we are usually using it as a comparison to ourselves. And in this way, we can do so- if the rating we started on was 2000, I would be rated 2600, and for this reason it is perfectly acceptable to use no matter what rating we start on.

Defacto

I think that ansver is 43
