What's it called again when a player inflates their rating by playing only low rated opponents. Met an 1800 the other day on twitch, but I reviewed his games, and all his wins came from opponents rated below 1000.

The only cool term I know from here is "sandbagging" but I'm not sure that's it

Sandbagging is when you intentionally lose games. I don't think there is a name for what the OP was asking.

I was thinking "sandbagger" as well, but I feel like there has to be a better term. It's definitely like sandbagging in that it's artificially changing their rating but in some regards its the complete opposite. Sandbaggers try to artificially lower their ratings for kicks, but he's doing the artificially inflating his.  I appreciate the response though.

Yeah it's in that ballpark.happy.png hmm I can't think of it right now but maybe google has the def

Azathot0

i found a better term, don't know if it's offical or not.. but it's called "lemon fixing" it means the same as sandbagging but in a more toxic way.

In gaming world it’s called “seal clubbing” I think

I don't know how valid the strategy is, though. When you lose to someone rated far below you, you lose LOTS of rating points.

I guess you could make up your own name for it - call it "helium ballooning", idk...

It's called "Lame."

It's also a long slow crawl upward. Then when you inflate yourself against peanuts and then play someone half decent, you go bust. Total waste of time.

sndeww

And all the peanuts come flying out and it makes a complete mess. So annoying

Night_Assa55in

also called as rating farming

DrSpudnik

The problem with this rating farming is that eventually one of the goobers will eventually beat you. Then you have to win another 35 games to make up the lost ground, at which time you'll lose another game. Let's face it, someone who has to resort to such nonsense to win points, really can't be very good.

sndeww

I honestly don't know why people do that. It's extremely insecure.

Actually, it is reverse.

As there is +800 elo diffference, 1800 must win x100 times than equally rated opponent.

If 1800 play 1000, and if he get,

100/100 win = 1 win against 1800.

99/100 win= 1 draw against 1800

98/100 win= 1 loss against 1800

In general, it is harder to get 100/100 win against -800 lower rated opponent than 1 win against equally rated opponents.

That is why, there is 400 elo bracket among Titled norm tournments. ( lower rated player cant be  more than -400 elo lower than the targeted rating).

Exactly.

In general you'll deflate your rating by playing a lot of lower rated people.

sndeww

You lose one game and your rating go down faster than someone in a waterslide

ponz111

Actually you cannot really artificially increase your rating by playing low rated players. If anything the reverse is true.

Vanisheduser12345

Boosting. But what you said is allowed. You ARE NOT allowed to arrange a win or loss to inflate/deflate a rating.

This. A rating difference of 200 points equates to a 3-to-1 chance of victory... and the rating loss involved in losing or drawing makes it a very poor risk.

qpau

Well, that means they are weaker which means extra rating!
