Cheaters Beware - You Will Be Caught

I havent read the whole thread so I dont know if this has been adressed already, but I noticed many members on chess.com are people who got banned on redhotpawn ( a different cc site) and now are playing here.

I hope these people will be thoroughly watched by the admins here, because im afraid they will fall back in their bad habits again.

We were all born sometime.  Mine is 1939.  My Dad was born in 1907, so 1901 is a missprint or---

There are a lot of examples of people cheating and then advertising how good they are in their blogs and other sites which utilize turn based systems or long time controls. But none of them will post their 2 minute games or be able to explain many of their winning moves other than giving "1. Kxa2 Rd4 2.Qa2 f3 3.Nh6 Bxh7!! (insert next imaginary fifteen plies here) with 3.09754 advantage for White (+-)". Many do so to besides having a big number next to their name, increase their online reputation (I AM SO COOL!), get people digging them, etc.

I am not that good but improving and just having fun.  And have been really impressed with this web site.  Cheaters are annoying.

One suggestion for the casual user especially.  Try and use the "friend" feature for matches.

Hopefully, after lots of interesting challenging games with "friends" it will be easy to find lots of interesting and challenging rematches.   I have a rematch scheduled with someone from yesterday and I am really looking forward to it.

There is a link on the bottom of the page.... no... ALL the way down. It says "Report Abuse". Click that, fill out the form, and you are all set.

I'll take on all challengers especially with higher rankings in live chess,, oh and cheating is bad by the way

I just want to ask. If I use chess opening book beside me while playing, is it cheating? Thank you.

batgirl
no. that's allowed by chess.com policy.

Cheating to inflate your rating is like cheating to inflate your IQ. Even if you get away with it, all you're doing is giving yourself a permanent reminder that your real threshold of performance is lower. Doesn't sound too ego-stroking to me.

That being said, I have played games in which the opponent replied so promptly and confidently that I've suspected a computer was on the other end. Since Live Chess has its own computers playing away, I can only imagine such people are supplementing their play to get their rating up to where they imagine it should be.

If so, I think they're falling for a common feeling among players, which is that you believe your best rating is your true rating, whereas your lower ratings are aberrations.  I'm personally in that trap, having recently blundered away two games in quick succession, and watched my rating fall as a result.

I'm furious at myself for doing so, but you know what? I can use that fury as a motive to rid myself of sloppy playing habits. If I accept it as such, it's a gift.

One of the things I really enjoy about Chess.com is the way it combines social networking with play; you're really able to get a sense of the person on the other end of the board. I suspect that robotic computer-driven play will automatically self-limit: if they're not caught, they'll just end up playing each other.

Remember though, even bad players like me .... after a several move calculation, if my opponent does what I hoped or forced then often the following moves are  FAST.

It just happens that these fast moves are also often painful for the opponent.

But of course! I was referring to players who seem to make every move in the same general interval of time, more or less.

If I was to say that in reality I am a GM but I use a clever little programme that enables me to lose convincingly, thereby keeping my status a secret, would I be banished?

What a strange scenario :P

And yes, as far as I know any outside assistance is 'cheating'.

This thought may annoy some, but I really don't care that much if someone cheats me because I just want to play some chess. I'm not making a living at this and the computer screen looks the same whether someone is cheating or not. The ratings do serve a good purpose in that they give you an idea of your strength as a player and what range of player you should be playing to have a satisfying game. I assume I'm somewhere in the 1600's because I often draw with folks in the 1600's. I will resign early for a foolish blunder, to keep others from hanging on when I have to do other things , or if I have accepted a game from someone whose rating is far below mine and feel like looser myself for picking on them. My interest waxes and wains with how much I have been playing. I get bored with it if I have been playing too much and go off to pursue some  of my many other interests. However, I do think it is a good thing to keep the cheating under control simply because I don't respect the people that do and don't care to be associated with them.

All I would like to say is "thank you Chess.com"  for allowing those of us who want to play the game, at our own pace, can play...free of charge if we wish.  For the cheaters - they only cheat themselves and so far I don't think I have encountered any of them.  I hope that majority of the players here use this site for enjoyment.  For me its only a game.  I enjoy all the "traps" I encounter, but only because I learn from them.  I am in my first tournament and believe I may be going into the second round.  I am having fun and this site is great.

For the cheater that may read this:  "Don't you have anything better to do?"

Thanks for reading my rant....

I don't want blame nobody without proofs but in my opinion I think about 10% players which are in TOP 100 on chess.com are cheaters.Catch them all!
MapleDanish

The number one thing I reccomend to whoever is moderating this site... DON'T bann someone unless you are 100+% sure!!!  One wrong move and no one will have trust in the site ever again...

If you aren't sure they're cheating, don't bann them...

However people who are DEFINITELY cheating should have their account removed and not be permited to re-register.

TonyGas
And how can you be 100% sure?
