Cheaters Beware - You Will Be Caught

I've recently had an incident with an opponent, who in his profile-text admitted to using a chess-computer while playing rated games, making no exeption for tournament games, as we were playing.

First of all I'd like to give credit to the admin for the way you have handled this case. I'm fully satisfied, and for me you have brought the fun back into playing chess on the web. I feel that you are taking this matter very seriously, and that you do not hesitate to take action when you are convinced someone has been cheating.

I was not aware of the subject being discussed in this forum, and I'm relived to find that it's discussed with such openness. To me, it makes Chess.coms politics towards the subject even more trustworthy, and I would have been very happy if I'd had been given a link to this forum when filing my complaint. It would also be great to find a link to this forum in the "Terms Of Service" page (maybe underneath the Basic Rules part).

Personally, Ithink the "analysis board" feature should be removed from this site. In a way it is cheating. In "real" chess you don't get the option to make a series of moves to see if it is going to work out for you or not. In addition you don't learn to think ahead if you use the "analysis board".  Just my opinion though.

I disagree strongly! In correspondence-chess, wich correlates the most to online-chess, using an analysis board has been a part of the game for ages, and it has never been considered cheating. To me it's an exellent tool, and the only thing I regret is that I've found no way of copying the moves I make on the analysis board into my personal notes.

yoyomanyo

yeah totally

I agree with you.

You should never do this.Or you should get banned.

The analysis board is basically an online version of having a real board beside you, except much quicker to set-up, make moves etc.  Having a board beside you and trying out moves is a long accepted practice in correspondence chess, so why not allow an online version?

This is my opinion too, chess.com should remove it.

Are you all serious???? even if removed, you can still do it on your board at home, then that counts as cheating, PPPLLLLLEEEAASEEE, if you want to play at game, stick to OTB games,

ashdown33

When you play OTB it is touch move, touch take. At least in tournaments. I primarily use chess.com to practice for OTB games and feel that the analysis board is more of a crutch then a help. If you want to use the analysis board it should be set as an option in "friendly games" but not available in any match or tournament games.

And yes, if a person wants to set up their board at home and go through the trouble of having to change it around for every game there's no way to stop that but I suppose you can derive pleasure from realizing your opponent really needs to find something else to do with their time.

And more importantly, you wouldn't see Bobby F. or any of the other greats using any type of assistive device(engines, analysis board, etc) unless they were practicing. So if you want to be good at chess, not just online chess, I would surmise that training your brain to work multiple moves ahead is the way to go and leave the assistive devices for the beginners and the hacks.

I hate cheaters, and those who use chess engines are the worst.

If you want to use online chess to practice for OTB, that is your choice. But online chess is not OTB chess. It uses different rules, and you should respect those rules. Furthermore, you should respect the people who play by those rules, and not call them "cheaters" and "hacks."

well in real chess(by that you mean OTB chess, i think) you don't have 3 days per move, vacation etc. Live chess is online chess version of OTB, not the turn-based wich is a representation of correspondence chess, where analysis board is permited, as are books, opening databases(wich we can use on this site too) and so on...So play Live chess and you will have no problems with analysis board.

Cheating on chess.com is pointless.  We arent playing for money.  I at least had respect for the dude with 6 computers cheating at online poker.  He at least made about a million $$ before he was caught.

Novice1100

your here to learn that's why it's pointless. and besides. so what if there's legal moves on the analysis board?

pushwood

first impressions are important- do I look like I cheat- oh wait, never mind...

blacktraveller

One way to make cheating difficult- take away that GET PGN feature.

vendfriender

cheating has really ruined alot of the fun, maybe if noone had ratings anymore people wouldn't want to cheat as much, idk, it seems so solutionless. even if they're banned what stops them from making a new account and doing it all over.

blacktraveller

it's sad but it's real. there are always cheaters wherever we go.... in truth and in fact, all of us are guilty of cheating sometime in our lives, somewhere, or somehow.... we have to face it.... cheaters are here to stay.... now you catch them now you dont...we just keep playing whether we are playing against a patzer, a human being, a computer or a monster.. let him make his move and i will play mine, as long as it is still chess. cheer up guys!

How would this have any impact on a cheater?  I'm sure the cheaters are using a program that stores the positions of all of their games.  They don't need to use the GET PGN feature.

ChrizzzKizzz

I have been accused of cheating on blitz chess, but I didnt cheat. I guess I played really good then))) Anyhow, what is the reason to cheat? So stupid to do it, you will just fool yourself!!

4chess

This site is good!  I play chess online to ENJOY a game of chess.  Play my best.  And not worry about results - lose, draw or win does not matter as long as you play to ENJOY your game!  Ratings do not matter as long as you are here for entertainment!

I just banned 3 members for cheating. If you are playing fake games, or making fake accounts and resigning games after just a few moves, you will be caught, and you will be banned. There are enough people on this site looking at the top players that if you try it, you will be found, reported, and banned. Simple enough

I apologize if this question is dumb, but how does one cheat on this website?  I understand resigning after a few moves, people have done that to me already, but I didn't realize that was cheating.  I just considered it a reflection of their character.  Thanks.
