Cherub_Enjel's account closed. Chess.com sends a strong message to all the trolls.

I wrote this in another forum post but i will post it here to get the message across.

The lesson Chess.com is trying to teach us is a simple one. "Be helpful, relevant and nice or you will be muted or your account will be closed".  As In life, if you don’t learn a lesson, then that lesson will keep presenting itself to you until you do.

The purpose of a forum is:

  1.  To give advice to other users.
  2.  To help motivate and inspire other users.
  3.  A place where people of all ages and backgrounds can discuss related topics in a safe and friendly environment.

Unfortunately, the chess.com forum has turned into the wild west. Some of the issues I have noticed in my short time here is:

  1. Elitism - Stronger players constantly mocking weaker players who are just starting out on their journey.
  2. Personal attacks- Users often insulting or degrading another user.
  3. Attention seeking- Users creating content with the sole purpose of bringing attention to themselves.

I am afraid to say that of all the forums I have been involved in, the chess.com forums are amongst the worse when it comes to cyberbullying. I am often amazed how evil people can be once they are hiding behind an avatar.

Absolutely correct.  Hopefully Chess.com is finally recognizing that they need to take a zero tolerance policy to the cyber-bullies...

These trolls feed and thrive on the attention they receive.  They do this through defecating their negativity anonymously on social media.  This is the only way they are able to feel relevant and affirm their otherwise empty existence.  They are incapable of contributing anything positive to society.  The best approach the rest of us can take is to simply ignore them and their posts - do not respond to them no matter how tempted you may be to do so.  Like weeds deprived of water, they will eventually disappear...

I was surprised that both <Urk> and <Cherub_Enjel> got engaged in activities that led to their account closures. These were two relatively new contributors, that I generally enjoyed reading - like many others.

After reading these threads, I hope that I'm not being too hard on lower-rated players, and I wish to apologize in case I ever offended someone on these pages (the exception being people who themselves abuse others, who therefore won't be immune).

I personally would like to see chess.com publicly address antisocial behaviour. It could be in the form of a video or a post from a representative of the chess.com administration.

"Cyber Manners" is now a required course in many schools.

There is trolling and then there is trolling.  Some light humour is not a bad thing.  Mods have a sense of humour too, and can appreciate some of the more clever attempts at trolling.  However, taken in the wrong direction, it can be a problem.

A good quote I once heard: "If the other person isn't laughing, it's not called funny, it's called mean."

What if they dont have a sense of humor?

Thats not exactly a great way to know if somehting is funny or not.

A lot of mods do.  OK, not all, but most of us are human and can see the funny side of something if it's there to be seen.

And yeah, that quote isn't a perfect way to tell if something's funny, but it's a good hint.  If the other person isn't likely to appreciate it, it's probably best not said.

You? More like the opposite.

How was she a troll? For what I have seen her posts where all related to good chess advice and I don't think she was here to troll but to play some serious chess

And the excuse train will still try and pull out of the station.

Thats what you get for making parody threads for controversial racist threads and creating multiple accounts to blog after getting a mute. You will have to pay the price eventually. She should have been wise enough not to play with fire near TOS policies.Chess.com says that ''Rules apply to all'',thats what this is.

Urk and Cherub_Enjel were trolls? I haven't come to the forums much recently but I always thought they were among the more helpful forum regulars. Maybe Urk was a little trolly sometimes, but he also would analyze games and stuff for people... And Cherub_Enjel was always helping out newbies.

What did they do exactly to get themselves kicked?

Wait. So it's a she now?

IcyAvaleigh
Was it a he? I have never asked it but I assumed it was a girl because her profile picture and I saw people calling her "her"

Some people seem to think that Urk and Cherub were the same person, being great at chess, good posts, then all of a sudden freaking out or exchausting the accepted trolling tolerance.

I don't think so.

solskytz

I don't think so either.

I don't think so.

That's an interesting theory.

Wow. I have 2 games going against this Cherub-Enjel character. It says the account is closed due to abuse. Does this mean I will be allowed to win on time?

Alreadygivenup

Yes..win points are yours to have.

WeakChessPlayedSlow

Wasn't his account closed because of multi-accounting, not trolling? He got muted for trolling, but closed for multi-accounting, no?
