Imagine you are the chess.com owner, charging £13.99 every month for premium, making absolutely millions every year and then saying to all your users "do you know what; as a millionaire, I do not make enough money, so I'm going to increase the amount you pay me".

I am absolutely disgusted that you have decided to increase your price, when you are already turning a huge fortune.  I hope that people do the right thing and cancel any renewals on this site as a protest.  Enough people cancelling memberships will start making you see clearly.

Oh, I get it now. This is what they mean by Cancel Culture?

If a business owner is a millionaire, that is completely irrelevant. The purpose of a business is to make money. If they already have a lot, the purpose is to make even more. That's how it works.

If the covid/inflation situation has taught us anything, it's that people are gullible. For many businesses costs have risen, so consumer prices also have gone up that amount, plus a little (or a lot) for profit. All you have to do it tell people it's not your fault, it's inflation (or other reason) and there is nothing anyone can do about it. Most people say, ok, and pay up. No questions asked.

Fortunately for some business costs have gone down or stayed the same. Automation, streamlining and technology advances will lower prices for many products or services. So those companies will see a huge benefit from raising prices while at the same time lowering operating costs. Smart business.

Wow! Someone who actually gets it! Bravo! Everything we have including food, cars, clothes, homes, etc was all produced by people who were attempting to make a profit and selling their products at the highest possible price, whatever the market will bear. It's the best economic system ever devised by humans and has lifted more people out of poverty and misery than any other system. I hope the owners of chess.com are, in fact, millionaires, and I hope they make more millions. They are providing a wonderful product at what I consider a fair price and if I didn't, I wouldn't pay it. If others aren't willing to pay it, the price will go back down. That's just how it works. Supply and demand.

Interesting that Gold membership will give unlimited puzzles instead of the currently limited 25. Combined with the removal of ads - which make short duration gameplay very dodgy - well worth the consideration given the zero increase in cost if you bump-up before the 1st of September, imo.

Although if I am reading things correctly the increase applies only to new Diamond customers, after the 1st. Guessing a Gold bump will come later.

The increased cost applies to all new subscriptions and upgrades on or after September 1st. Each tier has new prices.

Also, for those upgrading/purchasing before then get the features shown on their current upgrade screens, not the new plan features, if different, as I understand it.

A couple edits I would respectfully suggest:
1. Omit the word "maybe"

2. You charge what the market is willing to pay. (Just a change in wording, not meaning)

That pushes it in my opinion,

What do you mean "pushes it"? If they feel they are not making enough money, the whole point is to push it as far as possible. Too cheap and they don't make enough money, too expensive and they might lose paying customers. So they have to push it to see what people are willing to pay. Keep in mind if there is a way to reduce operating costs, through things like technology, automated responses, etc that may not yield enough extra profit. Raising prices will raise profits even more. Which is the whole point of having a business.

who paid u to say all of this?

Me

Yes, it's impossible. It's free for some, but not for everyone. The money it takes to operate that website, or any business or enterprise, comes from somewhere. Free just means someone isn't paying, but someone else is. One way or another.

The only way it could truly be free, for everyone, is by magic.

Maybe she just understands business better than you. In fact, there's no "maybe" about it.

Yes, maybe I'm just dumb. So, the people that donate, is it free for them? Or what about the volunteers, is it free for them? And what about the servers, the electricity to run them. Is that free? All the costs associated with operating that website, all free? Nobody pays for any of it?

I have to be honest, that's a business model I'm not familiar with.

She said it because she understands business. You question it because you don't.

I think I see the problem here. It's this "entitlement" mentality.  One person takes a big risk, works his butt off, and creates a business providing a good product. Then another person thinks he is entitled to that product free even though he sits on his butt in his mom's basement all day and contributes nothing.

The article explains the why.

As far as I'm aware, new accounts are still growing and daily games played are too. Maybe not as steeply as during the pandemic/Queen's Gambit boost, but still growing.
