Custom Games seem to lack serious support

I am currently trying to test out chess variants with a friend of mine.

Just to get things going, I made a relatively simple variant just to make sure that I had a grasp on the system, and the platform is suitable for my needs. The variant in question is as follows: Queen's Chess (aka "modern" chess), where the queen herself is replaced by a general, and the pawn promotion rules updated to match. I then saved the variant to My Templates.

I ran into trouble actually trying to play with the friend in question.
When attempting to enter in my friend's user name, it autocompletes to that of a different user entirely. When I circumvent this frustrating behavior via copy/paste, there is still no option to challenge, unlike the user that the name autocompletes to.

When I use the "Friends" tab and click the name, the drop-down menu conspicuously lacks the challenge button present on other screens. After doing some digging I found that this problem has persisted for many years, and the only way to work around it seems to be to use the "daily" game type, and to enter in a "FEN" code.
The last code I attempted was as follows:
rnbmkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBMKBNR w KQkq - 0 1
Like several of the ones I entered before, the message that I received was "This is not a valid FEN code" or something to that effect. Considering the fact that I had just copied what I previously found to be a valid Fen code, and replaced the Q and q with M and m while leaving the castling privileges indicators alone. (The best I can tell, M is the letter representation of the general). I currently believe it is impossible to use this method to play a game with fairy pieces.

So:
What, if anything, have I done wrong?
Is there any way to do what I want to do?
Are there any plans to make the process of playing custom games with your friends easier?

Those Variants are not integrated into the regular site, so you can't use a Daily challenge to set a custom FEN that uses any variant pieces.

You may get a good response in the Variants club.
