Debate: What to call "Online Chess"...

That's not an argument!
Yes it is.
An argument is a series of reasoned statements ..... it's not just an automatic gainsaying of what the other person has just said!
Yes it is.
No it's not!
Time's up.
No it's not! I was just getting started. That was never 5 minutes!
Yes, it was.
No, it wasn't.
If it was, why are you still arguing?!
I could be arguing on my own time.
(Sorry for the paraphrasing ... that was from memory...)

Let's all get together and have a mass debate!
Did I win?
You're the champ!

Change the "a" to a "u"? lol

MIL, quarrel is the word that you seek.
I was semi-quoting John Cleese and Micael Palin in their "Argument Clinic" sketch from Monty Python. Occasionally some forum comment exchanges bring that to mind ... not sure why .... ;-)

Hi, just discovered this thread and I know I'm 'a bit' late,,, BUT (I see its still called online chess).. lets call it Contemplative Chess :D
-moon.

I was confused for months, seeing 'Online Chess' and 'Live Chess' separated.. I knew what 'correspondance chess' was, but that didn't help me, because 'online chess' fails horribly to describe what makes it unique.
Is this a "problem" only because one lone soul (well intentioned, but perhaps misguided) doesn't like the "correspondance chess" moniker?
In other words, would we even be having this discussion if we were calling it 'correspondance chess' here at chess.com?
My opinion: we are making this way more difficult than it should be... do we really need to re-invent this wheel?

Nearly every second person voted for "Correspondence Chess", yet it appears that in v3 the name 'Daily Chess' was chosen, which is only backed up by ~ 9% of the people here. Why?

Erik can call correspondence chess whatever he likes. It is his site.
That seems to make sense, but then what was the point of this poll?

I suspect that he was hoping for an alternative that would be supported by the community. Finding that none exists, he decided to ignore conventional opinion and chart his own course.
Looking at Erik's homepage reveals that he plays more "online chess" than live, but also that his average move time is a few minutes. Traditional correspondence players may spend many hours per move. But there are many who play many games at once and move almost instantly after first viewing the board in each game. The thinking process is that of rapid chess even though the time control is measured in days per move.
The variety of playing styles contributes to the range of opinion concerning the best name.
Not all players research openings while playing online, turn-based, correspondence-paced daily chess. The further the name of this style of internet chess moves from postal or telegraph chess, the more traditional players will be forced to fend off in the forums accusations of cheating from the masses who come to this game with no knowledge or concern for the vaunted traditions of research-based competition.
i hate the name "turn-based". All chess is turn based, my turn your turn.
I'm thinking 24/7Chess because if you are in enough games you can make a move 24/7. Or Chess24/14. 24 hrs to 14 days.
I know what you can call 960 live... Live960 ...when's that gonna be a topic?
I am marketing a verision of chess called "real time chess", a takeoff of realtime gaming. it works just like regular chess, except you dont have to wait for your opponent to move, you can move as fast as you want. If you can move 5 times to your opponents one, good for you.
I've already sold nearly half a million sets. Regional championshiops are getting started, and we hope to have a bona FIDE world champion in 2015.
