Can we all admit that there is a fine balance that has to be struck between open honest freedom of speech and subversive grumblings that clutter the forums from negative types with no real investment or effort made...?  A mood is struck here based on what is allowed to go on...  I once had my posts deleted because I had included the words "emotional succubus"...so I understand the irritation with overcensoring.

I don't think people should be allowed to create threads until they have a certain amount of games played or a certain time has elapsed. That would especially help with the imbeciles who make new accounts every day just to create nonsense threads.

Afaf, on some level i get what you're saying but you're missing 2 important points--one i made and i i didn't.

1. Erik thought the comment was worth quoting and worth discussing therefore not worthy of being deleted.  That seems to trump all your personal ideas about what should and should not be allowed at this site.

2. You start some pretty stupid threads yourself.  Remember the what rating will you play thread?  I do.  Or how about your Resigning games after losing one pawn.  Competitiveness or Bad Attitude thread?  let's not stop there, your Why play slower when losing? thread, was sorely unhelpful as well.

all of this is my opinion.  others might find these and other stupid threads helpful, but all do not.  my point is, your opinion isn't better than the dude's who thinks chess.com is a dysfunctional arena.  i tend to agree with him on some level although my opinion is not as damning...  anyway.  and if course you're right--dude is new, he obviously should give the site a bit of time before passing judgement but really--why do you care?

First point...just because Erik thinks this particular phrasing is amusing does not in any way suggest that the general attitude of the mods is to clean up negative clutter made by two day users is wrong.  Often they will allow our quotes of things to go unpunished while deleting the original user's statement so as to even give our responses their validity.

I didn't make the Resign after one pawn thread...but as for my others, obviously I felt there was something to take from those questions or opinions I wanted.  What Rating Will You Play Against is an excellent thread, by the way...despite its simplistic phrasing.  Maybe it bears nothing in your world but I actually do want to know how choosy people are in selecting opponents.  That's my interest in social norms.

As for this guy...I have no problem with anyone stating their opinion...but if I were a moderator or were to give instructions on moderating to create a happy fluid environment...as I said before...NEGATIVE INCITING REMARKS from n'import qui...or random individuals peeking in would fall under "you can delete".

I don't think factors like rating, the time spent on the site, status etc. should be a factor in who is allowed to post or open threads. The predictive value of these factors seems rather low to me. Besides, even the stupid threads sometimes generate interesting comments.

I actually began reading these threads to learn as best I could...but most of the postings offer little value.

You've got to feel for the guy who has been playing 60 years before coming to this site and having his mastery of the game made a complete mockery. Here's one of his two games on this site, his loss obviously due to a dysfunctional arena:

Lol his mouse skills are very poor obviously, 5-6 mouse slips in 9 moves.

Actually this brings me to another issue.  Why do I have two thread topics under my name that I didn't actually start?

Happened to me today... if you post after the OP and he later deletes his initial comment then you adopt the orphaned thread. I got rid of them by deleting my comment and then deleted the (comment deleted) bit. Third in line will now own the thread.

Threads might be helpful to ask tiny detailed questions but learning?  I come to threads because they're funny and I'm too tired to make any chess moves or study.  Anyone who comes more than twice knows what they're in for.  Smile  Chess-themed amusement.

i have been playing chess for 60 years and this is the most dysfunctional arena i have ever seen........

I am fairly sure this person has never been to a chess tournament

Well...one can even learn something just by participating in an intelligent discussion...not necessarily chess oriented...but I take your point.

Making fun of people is NOT the correct way of dealing with such matters Mr. Erik.

It doesnt matter if the post was nonsense..

Very pathetic in my opinion.

It was a joke at the topic, not the person who posted. Read it again! :P
