Faking It,
I’m a reasonable chess player; I have won a few tourneys. I can hold my own at IM master level, but over the years I became very disenchanted with chess. Basically, there is something rotten at all levels, especially online.

To prove this, 2 years ago, I embarked on creating a human-like engine that would only make sensible moves. We shall call this engine “Judas.”

For six months, I tweaked and optimized the Engine (CC+ and open-source code). In those months, I held tourneys with all top engines. Judas was weak in the middle game but held its own in openings and end games. In the end, I settled on Judas being approx 1800 rating when set to optimum.

I refined the opening book to a fundamental level going to a maximum of 6 deep. I refined the end game table base to 3.

The optimum search depth was 18, but at a depth of 6 played very much like 1800. Judas will only see up to mate in 3.

Judas first made an appearance on Chess.com 18 months ago. It was easy. Firstly, I created five platinum accounts, from new to expert. I then set about establishing personalities and credibility for each of these accounts by posting in forums, writing articles and blogs. I then slowly built a game base.

Using parameters, I was able to simulate ratings from 400–1000, 1000-1400, 1400-2000 and here is where it gets really interesting 2000-2400.

Each of those five bot accounts is still active, with 3500+ blitz and rapid games played in each. I made sure that the ratio of won/lost games never exceeded 65%/35%.

I can guarantee Judas has played most of you so-called players and beat you all. Judas regularly trash talks to most of you in arenas and chat. I love it when Judas plays a streamer and nobody knows it’s an engine.

Bear this in mind, Judas is rated approx 1800 as far as modern engines go. Yet it has successfully completed 3000+ blitz games undetected (playing as human) at ELO 2390 – 2460. This tells me most of you are not very good blitz players.

The hardest part was creating human like moves. Programming Multi PV – up to 12 candidate moves was the best solution. Judas will assess and chose the best move to keep the game even, not to win. Judas will only kick into full mode once a blunder has been detected. This ensures games remain even with a sensible proportion of good and inaccurate moves. Yet avoids complex tactics and combinations.

When a game ends Judas leaves the chat room and waits for 10 minutes and then searches for a new game.

One unique feature of Judas is that by utilizing scripting within the Firefox browser it can trash talk opponents at a basic level, as trash talkers are generic this was easy. Judas simply ignores real conversations.

What I find truly interesting in the 1400-2400 ELO range is the enormous number of points I have reclaimed due to others cheating. Ironic that a game can be checked for cheating yet only catch the obvious one.

Judas can play all single player genres successfully without detection and any human interaction. In the morning I just choose an account, fire Judas up and walk away. He happily plays all day.
• Bullet – Judas is powerful at 2200 on chess.com. If set to play at 1200 ELO.
• Blitz – Judas is strong at all levels to 2400+ on chess.com with just enough “bad play” to make it seem human. Judas is set at 1800 rating to play a 2400 chess.com blitz game, which shows how bad you really are!
• Rapid – Judas is robust up to 2200+ set at 1800 rating.

If I commercialized this software, it would be the end of online chess. But on 25th December at exactly 12pm (GMT) . Judas will be retired, and the five platinum accounts deleted.
