Feature Requests and Wishlist Thoughts #2

How? Specifics please.
[ERIK says: i have already heard how :) we talked about it. he wants it to be totally open so you can make any kinds of moves (legal or not), and to be able to go back as far as you want and do any moves any time. we'll get to it.]

If you do make the analysis board able to make not-legal moves, could you PLEASE make that an option, instead of making the whole board "move-wherever-you-want"? For us beginners, we could make a slip-up on the analysis board, and that would nail us on the actual game. When I do use the analyze board, at least I have the comfort of knowing that future moves I want to make are legal and checked by the system.
A request: what about the option to hide your online status? I am not allowed to make moves while at work, but I can stay logged in, read the posts, etc. I have gotten flak from people about "why do I see you logged on but you haven't moved?" I have tried to explain to them what is up (e.g. don't want to get fired), but they remain annoying...would that be hard to do?

That's what I've been doing, but it's a waste of time, especially if you go back and forth trying different combinations. The whole point is to make this as streamlined of an experience as possible.

I know this one's tiny, but it drives me nuts, so please forgive me cluttering this thread with it:

Should take you to the
#last_comment tag, not the beginning of the thread.

So it does, what a tiny target though.
[ERIK says: we used to have it the other way, and people complained. no matter which way we do, people complain. that is why we added the bubble, and added the " Previous | 1 2 3 | Next » | Last Post link :) ]
[TheGrobe says: I will simplify my request then. Can we please change the text from "View Post" to "View Posts"?]

Yeah, but my guess is that they can't fit "Last Post" in there, though, hence the smaller icon...it is nice to be able to go to the start or end of the post, however, with these two choices....

To re-iterate: this site is utterly brilliant, already.
And! REPOST something some else said:
"Chat Entry box in Turn based is too small, tough to proof read...could be three rows high or something."
Eric, you said it's on the list; just wanting to push it a little higher! This is a constant issue, at least for me. Culturally, a bigger box might well encourage more chat - see big box?; use it! - which is consistent with the notion of chess community.

Threefold repetition recognition in live chess would be nice.
[ERIK says: that is already there - it just isn't automatic - you need to claim it. perhaps we should make auto-claim an option...]

Recruit more grandmasters and FM / NM etc... Once the site / business is in profit, start paying for recognised top players to spend time here. This will attract even more new players and converts from other chess sites / online clubs.
[ERIK says: once... oh, that magical once...]

There is no reason this site cannot become the primo chess website on the internet. Fantastic domain name, good, dedicated team. Superb potential.
It's the sort of community that VC's would finance, provided they could be persuaded to see the long term benefit of having top ranked players contracted to play X number of games. Unfortunately the vast majority of players outwith the developed country player-base wouldn't be able to afford a subscription.
Even still, with and correct advertising (obviously tied to the financing), the long term potential of this site is exciting!
I'm glad to be a part of it!

Here is one more. Expand the site to include different language portals, most of the site is text, so it is possible, but complicated.
Although most foreign players we have at the moment can navigate the English pages to start a game, it may be that the addition of more Eastern European languages and perhaps Asian languages version(s) would vastly increase the player base (and average skill level of player).
Of course this is still linked to the above point of available funds. But!!.. You might be surprised at how cheap overseas language programmers / coders can be contracted on freelancer / script websites (getafreelancer .com etc..).
That's enough for now :)

Really great site.
Here’s the three things I’d want.
Enable the spell checker feature in Firefox to work in your text input windows.
Make the handling of carriage returns in the text input windows match what you get after clicking submit. It doesn’t seem very WYSIWYG right now. For example, I have to put in 2 CRs between paragraphs in the text input window to get one in the submitted post.
This last one is more of a vision than a feature. It would be cool to have a really innovative teaching room. Teacher can invite student/s and allow public viewing or not. One chat window for teacher & student/s. One for onlookers. Board is live and completely flexible for setup and moves, legal or not. Examples of use: Teacher or student could take the queens off the board at any time, or move the king 3 squares, and type “now what would you do?” Teacher or student can move pieces for both sides, to demonstrate opening systems, traps, endgame play, etc. Could be a good offer for premium members.

On the per-game message board, because much of the messaging is related to the game moves, it would be nice if the latest move was inserted along with each message, as a sort of time stamp.
For something really fancy, the text of the move ("22. Qf7+") could hyperlink to the game position at that time.
[ERIK says: interesting. my comments are rarely about the game :) i'll consider...]
