Let's just vote on this guys. Erik, if you read this maybe you should make a survey on the front page asking what we think.

It's a win win situation for everyone as well as Eric...chat ooms would bring a lot more people to play...and customers for Eric.

So far there are basically two opinions that seem to be prevalent: "no, we have plenty of communication tools already" and "yes, it's ok, I can turn it off."

Not very positive...

will it affect the speed of the site Erik?

It's another object your browser has to load, so it will. That's my main concern.

I can't see a negative side at all.  If you don't want it, you turn it off and the site runs as before.  If you want it, you've got something extra.  And no time from the chess.com staff will be taken up, as it will be installed by a third party!!

I VOTE YES!!!!!

Except as Eric has mentioned, the option to turn it off will not be available for free members.

Ah...sorry, didn't see that...

I have been tracking this forum topic.  I have not seen the note.  Hrm...I did kind of skim it, I suppose...

Unlike most; I vote no.

If I wanted to talk to people, I could go to Facebook or something like that. Yes I am old fashion like that.

Plus just imadgin the spam people could give, "Hey joint THIS group!" you say no, then they wait five minutes to do it again.

No cuz i dont think chatting is safe.

I hate those ads.  I hate chatting, except with my kids.  Hmmm I guess that means I don't hate it, and here I just wanted to be a hater.  Maybe I can be anyway since none of my kids play chess and I hate that (but my son-in-law does, and my wife hates that I got him involved in playing chess, we're a family of haters. Yay.)

How about we only offer the chat feature to paid members?

1. more people want to be paid members, so more money for chess.com

2. no one complains about not being able to turn it off.

interesting - meebo just announced that you can hide the bar! check it out at: www.mashable.com - on the far right side there is a down arrow that lets you hide it. interesting...

Avatar of TheGrobe

I assume that only hides the bar when inactive though -- do the ads and incoming messages still find their way onto your page even when the bar is hidden?

I just went to that website and tried it with and without scripts.  Without scripts the page is fine.  Turn on the scripts (necessary for the chat bar) and it becomes a horrible bloated page.  You can see the difference just scrolling the page with and without allowing scripts from cafemom.com with noscript.

of course, firefox is a buggy piece of junk so it could be that, but performance is unsatisfactory in ie8 too, albeit less so.

how do you turn scripts off?

Use Firefox to browse internet, and install NoScript addon - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722.
