If you REALLY wanted to chat, you could easily open a new tab and log onto meebo yourself. There is no point in making EVERYONE use this add-on, especially when there's no option to turn it off.
Indeed if it ever gets implemented I will block it using NoScript. I still find Meebo's attitude of wanting to force their ads on free members wrong.
I'm not much for instant messaging, but as a concept I think chess.com needs to do what it can to keep pace with other social sites such as facebook or myspace etc. Should help chess.com
Let's just vote on this guys. Erik, if you read this maybe you should make a survey on the front page asking what we think.
So far there are basically two opinions that seem to be prevalent: "no, we have plenty of communication tools already" and "yes, it's ok, I can turn it off."

I can't see a negative side at all. If you don't want it, you turn it off and the site runs as before. If you want it, you've got something extra. And no time from the chess.com staff will be taken up, as it will be installed by a third party!!

Unlike most; I vote no.
If I wanted to talk to people, I could go to Facebook or something like that. Yes I am old fashion like that.
Plus just imadgin the spam people could give, "Hey joint THIS group!" you say no, then they wait five minutes to do it again.

I hate those ads. I hate chatting, except with my kids. Hmmm I guess that means I don't hate it, and here I just wanted to be a hater. Maybe I can be anyway since none of my kids play chess and I hate that (but my son-in-law does, and my wife hates that I got him involved in playing chess, we're a family of haters. Yay.)
How about we only offer the chat feature to paid members?
1. more people want to be paid members, so more money for chess.com
2. no one complains about not being able to turn it off.
interesting - meebo just announced that you can hide the bar! check it out at: www.mashable.com - on the far right side there is a down arrow that lets you hide it. interesting...
I like it, since we only have messages and game chat currently.
