No, you don't need people on your friends list to play. You need to accept someone's open invitation to play chess or make one yourself. They get grabbed up pretty quickly...

When I want to play with somebody does he/she have to be in my friendlist?
Add me to friendlist becuse I dont now nobody in this site, but I still want to play chess.
