How do adaptive bots work?

Because I’ve been playing these bots in between lessons to try to apply what I’ve learned. I figured they’d be the most useful in this because if I was playing horribly I might still be able to apply some new skills if they blundered for me to make the game a bit more even.

I started with Nisha who was fun to play at first, even while losing, but when I started consistently winning I moved on to Tomas. Tomas forced me to work on a few skills before I could even secure my first win. Absolutely relentless even when winning. He did give me a few wins once I started to really improve but eventually I got to a point where I started winning consistently, although it was still a challenge every time.

Then I got to Devon and… what?
I immediately realized it was time for me to buckle down and study openers against Devon as he was absolutely decimating my back ranks within the first 15 moves; but what I’ve found is that he, weirdly, throws games when I’m winning? It feels like he adapts opposite of Nisha. The better I play the more he blunders, the worse I play the more oppressive he is.

I thought I could gauge my improvement against these bots but I’m starting to feel like I’m wasting my time here? I don’t know, winning against Devon feels meaningless and it’s making me question if I actually even improved at all up to this point.

Adaptive bots will match their play level with you. If you blunder it may do the same later to compensate.

Try bots with a rating of 2000 or more... they will give you a decent game.
