member points or rating points?
How do points help you?

I don't know, I don't try to get member points, and rating points only tell how good of a chess player you're are.
None. But when you see someone posting drivel and then notice they have thounsands of posts....well, it's lets you know that most of their posts are probably as pointless.

I seem to recall a post in the last two months where Erik said he would give a shirt to a person with 1,000 points.
I didn't focus on it long enough to see if he was joking.

they aren't for spamming the forums. they are to measure how active you are on the site. people like you who spam the forums destroy that. sad.
Thank you for killing the other thread. When a spam thread is deleted do they lose the silly "points" for this as well?

If you get enough points, you get a sparkley cape with 'CS' stitched on it (short for CHESS SUPERSTAR) and a free spidermonkey* (*well, it's a spidermonkey picture actually. Customs would just not let us slide on the 'No Shipping monkeys even if they have food and air holes' rule.... sorry.

I've found that the member points are a good way to judge how active someone is on the site, but it is wrong to write up small messages just for the accumulation of member points. Most of my posts are a paragraph or more and usually only post on threads that seem interesting. I find myself constantly browsing the new topics but only few do I read.
I've found that I appreciate the threads that start with a story of some sort about a game or what not and lead to something rather than just a question posted to get reactions. Unless that question is a valid one, most of the time, the questions posted about games have already been covered at some point and it would be easy enough to run through the forums and find what you were curious about.
Why get points?
(Pardon the pun) Is there any point to getting points?
