How do you know if a player is offering a challenge for an unrated game?

I only play live games, so it must have something to do with the graphing? Is it the dots in the centre that signfies unrated?
Last night I won two games and my rating didnt increase. I later found out that the games were unrated. How do you know if a game is going to be unrated, please?
