Magic? Must have been a correspondence ("online") game. You can even play with takebacks. If you're banging moves back and forth, you might not know except for no timer. Or I could be wrong again.

Just to the right of the game in progress is all you need. Big orange "start new game" button and a drop down time menu to choose your preferred game. Click on the little upside down triangle and get started.
years ago I played live chess with a chess.com coach - and he set it up so we played live and since his rating was high and mine was low - we set it up so the game was unrated so a lucky win by me would not affect his rating - how did he do this ?
