yeah, in 1. i can imagine there are some spots like that. i just don't know of them.

3. yes, i agree. for 99.99% chess remains a hobby payed for by other employment.

David,

I understand chess when YOU talk. Please write a book, several books and I will buy every one of them. That should help pay the bills so you can play more chess. Cool

dpruess

hey, thanks for the compliments, but i'm happy with my current relation to the game. i am lucky enough to play the occasional serious game, and a fair number of not-so-serious games, and i have a blast :-)

i have several ideas for books, but no time for them, so they remain distantly in the offing.

TheOldReb

Speaking of books....... are there any good books that teach a player how to teach others ?  I am thinking of teaching more as I age and need some concrete plans/goals to teach by.... my wife says I am a terrible teacher because I am too impatient.... Surprised

thesexyknight

No need for books. Work on patience by trying to play chess while only moving pieces with your feet.

You know you want to be a GM so bad you can taste it.

dpruess

Reb, I don't know of any good book about teaching chess.

Hasn't David said that he isn't all that concerned about titles anymore?  Taking him at his word would be cool.

He never said it where I read it.

Conflagration_Planet

He only has to beat one more GM.

You can learn patience by teaching this teacher. Music came far too easy for me. After my one year of serious study in chess, I do believe the village idiot down some street has made more progress than I by not reading any books and just playing a few games each week. Yep. Teach me and you will have the patience to teach anyone. Laughing

You might like to check-out a Susan Polgar instructional DVD at the library, for ideas on how to teach chess.   She really has some good ones in my opinion.

I think Shankland quit norm hunting not chess.

"The new Boston team is called the Nor’easters ..."

"The captain of the new team will be David Vigorito and the team’s roster (which must number nine) has been issued and it is: IM Samuel Shankland, IM Robert Hungaski, IM Vigorito, IM Jan van de Mortel, FM Charles Riordan, FM Braden Bournival, FM Christopher Chase, NM Alex Cherniak, and NM Carey Theil."

Dylan Loeb confirms Shankland will attend Brandeis University in Boston but makes no mention of the Nor’easters.

Seems adamant about forgoing the World Juniors. Anybody know if this opens up a place for the US Junior runner up?

thesexyknight

Will he be able to play for his college? I'm not sure if the NCAA runs chess or not but if they do... no one that has ever received prize money would be able to compete at that level because they would be deemed a "professional".

Conflagration_Planet

What's his major?

thesexyknight

I guess no one knows....

I've been thinking about this for a while and finally decided to rant about it.  If you care to take a read:

Excellent blog. After watching your interview with Sam Shankland, it sounds like players in the U.S. are at a big disadvatange of achieving GM norms that FIDE will accept. Is this true?

Endgame_Clothing

Thanks for reading, Musik!

Yes, I do think the U.S. players have a harder time finding FIDE rated tournaments local to them.

Also, the interview was done by Jennifer Shahade...I just wrote about it ;-)

John.

I played Shankland when he was 1800. He played thousands of games, studied, etc. to get where he is.
