but you got checkmated, and the game ended

I always say ‘good game’ and make a comment relevant to the game just played like ‘Wow! You totally kicked my arse!’ or ‘You nearly had me! Luckily I had those 2 rooks at the end’ etc.

Good sportsmanship is important. Long story short don’t be a prick unless you’re playing a mate then you can rub it in if you win haha

I thought saying gg(good game) was a sign of good sportsmanship, but looks like some people think it's like insulting your opponent if he lose. Some people may take it as sarcasm, but what if he is saying by his heart as their are no facial expression while saying gg some people might take it the wrong way.

I often say gg if having a tough fight no matter wining or losing, and I say with my heart not trying to be mean but looks like many people don't like it.

u should say gg when u finish ur game regadless of the result dont say it during the match as its just a bit mean. dw saying gg during the game wont get u banned or anything its just an unwritten rule

If anybody out there seriously gets upset because someone said ‘good game’ as they took it the wrong way frankly needs to either harden up or see a therapist. Why people get salty over words is something I’ll never understand…

I avoid 'Good Game' if either of us made really bad errors or if I won easily. On the other hand, I don't feel slighted if the opponent says 'Good Game' although it wasn't a good game.

SnubDragon124

same

navinashok

i say gg or :good_game

whether i lose or not

if my opponent trash talks or something then no

if it is a mate i see in a few moves i say gg and i play the moves

same thing turned around, if a am being mated in a few moves i will say gg and i lose

if i am low on time and im losing i still try to win but say gg at end

same when i am winning

Omega_Doom

Saying gg after winning is definitely sarcasm.

How can it be a good game if your opponent lost? - sarcasm.

SnubDragon124

gg implies that they were a worthy opponent in my opinion

I always say GG, win or lose. To me it's basically the same as a handshake at the end of a game. I find it a bit rude when ppl don't bother to reply, but that seems to be quite common.

This is exactly how I look at it too.  It's like a handshake -- "we were competing hard in a game but it's over, now we're just two humans showing mutual respect and appreciation."  My habit is always to say good game, win or lose and it never occurred to me until very recently that saying good game after I won might be taken as sarcasm.  (The reply was "idiot").  I'm still pretty much a beginner or novice, so if there's a consensus in the online community that saying "good game" after a win is bad manners, then I'd like to know.  Not seeing any such consensus in this forum though, and right now I plan to keep saying it.  It's rare that anyone says anything to me after a game though.

I would say good game, but only after the game is over. If you are winning and say that it is rather rude.

Typing gg at the end of the game is most appropriate after a close game. However, typing gg to an online opponent that you've never met after a win could be interpreted as rude. Each side can not really know the other's intentions. I, myself, have never gotten a gg in the chat from a opponent. I am also a gamer, and ggs at the end of games are considered respectful and normal.

I can relate man

In gaming, typing gg in the chat at the end of a game is normal, expected, and is seen as a sign of respect. I never even considered how typing gg after winning would be rude. I get that not everybody is respectful, but still... In gaming, both sides are expected to say gg. I know that gaming is not chess, and chess is not gaming, but I still wish I could say good game earnestly and sincerely at the end of every game (not including the games with throwers and stallers) and have people assume that I mean it.

One option:  You can type gg and if anybody complains about it enough to get you upset then you can say "but I really do Gotta Go".  Then drop off for a few minutes until you regain your composure.  If they later call you out for not leaving then simply respond that a basic biological requirement is that when you Gotta Go that means you Gotta Go.
