Is this immoral

Sandbagging is when you resign lots of games to get your rating down, and then enter tournaments with players much weaker than yourself to give you a good chance of winning.
Idiotic and pointless.

Gee, a lot of people like to pass judgement don't they!
Is he hurting anyone else by doing what he is doing?

No, he's just a tool. That's all we're saying.

Why is he a tool? You play for your reasons, he plays for his. What he does doesn't effect any of us in any way, so why be so judgemental?

Are you referrig to me Donald?
A troll is someone who asks why others want to label someone for doing something that affects no one else other than themselves?
If that's the case, I'm a troll and proud of it.

I think that it also bears mentioning that opponents' average rating is always determined by their rating after a game ends, not on what it was when a game began. If someone is rated 1400 and have only played a few games, when they lose to someone of equal strength their rating might drop into the 1200s, the winner's will rise perhaps into the 1500s, and that will make it seem as if the winner chose to play a weaker player. AOR might be more equitable if it was determined based on an opponent's rating when a game begins, rather than what it adjusts to when a game is completed.

Finally the voice of reason. Thank you Suggo. This forum was not about me, but it might just as well have been, as I have the same trend, although to a lesser extent. But I am not fooling myself, nor stroking my ego, nor getting any special kick from beating a lower rated player. What I am doing is playing for fun which, for the most part, means playing against my friends. Most of them, but certainly not all, have a lower rating than I do. Anyway, on another note, I would be more critical of the type of challenge that forces the opponent to play black in an opening that disadvantages black. This is something I have never done, nor do I plan to. But even here, before I pass judgement, I would still ask if there might be some benign reason for it.

He is a tool for the same reason I would be if I hung around an elementary school as a 6 foot five adult looking to start pick up basketball games with eight year olds, and then boasting about my prowess.
Its lame.

Is there any record of this person boasting about their prowess or gaining anything from this kind of strategy? Seeing as it's easy enough to check this information, just don't accept a challenge from him if you don't like how he chooses his games.
Granted, it's not my strategy for choosing games. I'll play anyone who wants to, although I tend to challenge at or above my level as I figure I'll be more likely to learn something (not always true).

He's obviously doing it to build a high rating, which is akin to boasting. I too, will play all comers, unless its a guy like that.

Wow, 36 comments. I didn't expect this response.
I suppose that such people are expected on the internet; frankly, it isn't that large of a deal to me. Thanks guys!

I have seen no boasting from this player...have you??
How is building a high rating akin to boasting?
As one of the other posters stated, you have no idea what his reasoning is behind what he is doing. He isn't hurting anyone and yet you want to attack him!??

Just as an update for you guys, in our game I am up 2 points in material (I traded a knight for a rook) and he just offered a draw. I am rejecting said draw.

Several months ago, I challenged someone who had roughly the same rating (mid 1700s) as I did. Never heard back from him. Looking at his profile, I saw the same pattern of rating inflation as the OP mentions. (His rating is quite a bit higher now.) OK, whatever. What's unsavory to me is that this guy is a coach and is (I assume) pumping his rating to get more students. Caveat emptor!

Thats the same mind set that allows Nike to hire slave labor that pays a $1 a day to make shoes that cost a hell of alot more. "It doesnt affect me so what"

Yeah, looks like he'll lose this game. How many points does he drop if he loses this? I'd imagine somewhere like 100.

Way out of the ballpark CPawn. What this fellow is doing isn't affecting anyone else other than himself. Worse case senario is someone that beats him may get a few more rating points than they probably should. To compare this to Nike and the exploitation of workers in emerging and third world countries is ludicrous!
I played a guy like that. When he blundered a piece or two, and was going to lose, he begged me (literally) for a draw, and cursed me when I declined.
I have found that 90% of people I have met in chess are great people, more than willing to help a newer player, and generally nice. But there is that 10% of whiny, arrogant, rude, jerks. Just do your best, and enjoy it when you beat them.
